For investment banking, in my opinion the course itself is less important than the uni you go to. There are ‘target’ unis, and if you go to one of these, it will set you up better. These include Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, UCL, LSE etc. (these are only a few of them) You don’t need a specific degree, but maybe something like economics would provide you with good skills. I would suggest taking a degree you would actually enjoy, and one which will give you a range of transferable skills.

Actually the best thing you could probably do is decide in which area you wish to work exactly, and apply for a degree apprenticeship.
You'll earn a relevant degree (paid for!) plus you'll have your foot in the door with a job.
PLUS you'll get other specialist qualifications.

You could become a member of: INSTITUTE OF CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS OF ENGLAND & WALES (ICAEW).

A lot of Big 4 ICAEW Chartered Accountants are hired by Investment Banks every year and there are only 3000 ICAEWs nationally each year who qualify.

The average salary for an ICAEW Accountant is £150,000 and rises to £300,000 a year as a partner in a firm in London.

ICAEW Accountants earn much more than ACCAs. Because ICAEW is considered more prestigious and 'rigorous' as well.

You can buy the guides available online for example WSO guides, etc.
Anything relating to economics, finance, maths or other quantitative subjects will be looked at positively. However, like someone mentioned above, there is an unwritten rule that says it matters which uni you go to (targets), rather than what you study.

Investment banks want the best candidates (especially the investment banking division), and they seek candidates from "target" unis to fill in their most prestigious roles. If you therefore attend any of the "target" unis, you will greatly increase your chances and would have overcome one of the biggest hurdles.

But, like someone said above, there are other ways to break into the industry as a young person. You should also consider degree apprenticeship. This involves undertaking a degree (sponsored by the bank) and at the same time work at the bank, in a hybrid system. You'll spend a few days working at the bank and the other days at uni.

Degree apprenticeships would not position you well for a front office job at an investment bank. Taking the standard route of Target Uni => Spring Week => Summer Internship => Grad Role is the best shot at the industry.

Hey, I have gotten an offer to study at Glasgow, bath, Bayes (cass/city), and Leads. I know they are not a target University but which option is the best for me to get into IB or AM?
