Hi!
I have just finished my first year as an English language and linguistics student at York St John University.
I am sure you may have heard of some of these resources and/or looked at them already, however I would recommend looking at:
David Crystal's discussions surrounding grammar
Much of Labov's research can be related to the beauty and necessity of grammar
Lackoff's views (largely outdated but my have some relevance to what you are discussing)
'The Necessity of Grammar Teaching' by Jianyun Zhang (2009) may be relevant
