Iteration question

Hi, not sure why these two methods give wildly different results?

How do I know which way to do it to get an equation that can be used for iteration. 84974329-9FBC-479D-A941-11A31D8D8AA6.jpg.jpeg

The left hand solution would yield convergence because you can produce a "staircase diagram" (is this in your textbook?). You can also get "cobweb diagrams" to illustrate convergence.
For the right hand solution, the diagram would show that the successive iterations move away from the root, called divergence.

Ah this is what I needed to know- thanks! No, this wasn’t mentioned: it was part of a homework for GCSE and I wasn’t sure why one method was correct and the other wasn’t.
