Nature of interference

I would like to know what features indicate whether constructive or destructive interference occurs. I know that it is dependent on whether bright/dark fringes are present but I am yet to find a question where those fringes are explicitly referenced.

The key point is if the two waves that interact are in phase (both have maxima and minima at the same time and place) or are in antiphase (maxima for one, minima for the other).
