An Inspector Calls

In "An Inspector Calls" did Eva Smith die, or was it all a hoax? I am confused because when the police department was called they confirmed that Goole was not an inspector working for them and when the infirmity was called they said no one had committed suicide for months. Despite this at the end the Birlings received the call saying that a girl just died. Was that girl Eva Smith? Did Eva Smith actually die?

I think you are supposed to infer that Eva Smith died at the end

In an inspector calls the family realises that Inspector Goole did not work for the police department and concluded that the whole story about Eva Smith could've been made up and fabricated due to the fact that each person saw a different picture. Due to this, who actually died at the end of the book?

I think the story is more using the inspector as a mouthpiece for priestleys socialist views about how all actions have consequences kinda like an extended metaphor
