Asian and Middle Eastern Studies applicants

looking for anyone else who's applied for AMES at oxford this year (or any current students) since it's such a niche subject!

personally i'm applying for japanese and just received an interview invitation yesterday. would love to find other applicants to know that i'm not alone haha and to discuss interview prep

My son is in his first year at The Queen’s College studying Japanese, so he was in your position last year. He really enjoyed his interviews! He was at a state sixth form and got little help with interviews from school, however we did have a lot of discussions at home. Obvious things like know your personal statement, know all about any books you have mentioned. Perhaps research your interviewers, I don’t know if that helped much but might help with confidence. I can’t tell you specific questions he was asked but try and forget the enormity of it and enjoy chatting with incredible experts in their fields, they were all really friendly, my son was even laughing!

i'd rather not say here since it's such a small degree but i can tell you in private message x

for interview prep i've reread the books i mentioned in my personal statement, been reading about modern japanese history so that i don't say anything hugely erroneous, watching some videos related to issues in japan and been practicing my japanese since i expect they'll ask me to speak in it and i'm a bit rusty atm haha. my school gave me 2 practice interviews but no one really has a clue about japan or asian studies so it probably wasn't the most accurate

that's wonderful! looks like i'm in a similar position as he was, i must say i'm excited for interviews since i've never had the opportunity to study japan in school or with a specialist like in oxford, but it's quite intimidating that they're so knowledgeable compared to me haha. thanks so much for your response x

which college?

Pembroke. Just had my interview.

I think I failed. The interviewers came off as sort of... bored? Like maybe I spoke to much? The frustration on their faces was sort of palpable. But then again, they are instructed not to give visual cues so maybe I'm misreading.

I've applied for the MSc in Japanese Studies at Oxford and I'm currently completing a degree in Japanese & linguistics elsewhere. I don't have any advice, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

I've not heard anything yet, besides an email a couple weeks ago asking if I had any proof of my Japanese level (I haven't been able to sit the JLPT yet) and I let them know I'll need to sit the test they offer, and they thanked me for letting them know. Haven't been invited to test or heard anything since. Honestly not expecting to get in, my grades are borderline and idk if they'd be willing to spend the time testing me if I'm otherwise not as strong a candidate, but still keeping my fingers crossed.
