Is getting into UAL graphic branding and identity difficult?

Hello, I am about to apply for graphic branding and identity at UAL but do you think I should apply to another graphic design course at the uni as well as a guarantee? Tbh I am not that interested in the other graphic design courses but I am also scared that I won't get accepted to the branding course. Can you give me some advice?

Congratulations btw!!😋 I just emailed them today so we'll see how it goes. They literally got only 15 days left to get back to me. I wish I could go to their offer holder day but I'm not sure if after this date they would have one

Hey! I ended up getting the offer 🙂. But I decided that the course is not for me after going to their offer holder day lol. I'm a bit sad I waited this long to just not go there but still I'm glad I got the option to.

Hey, are you doing the design and branding course at Loughborough by any chance? I received an offer from both and wondering how you reached this decision:smile:

Hello! Nope I'm sorry but I'll be doing Graphic design BA instead 🙂. But if you're still wondering as to why I chose Loughborough I kind of did like a what are the pros and cons of both courses thing in my mind! For me, UAL was my dream uni if I have to be honest but then I realised maybe it wasn't the best for me lol. Graphic Branding and İdentity was the most suitable course for me out of all the Graphic Design based courses in UAL. Even though I've been to both the open day and the offer holder day I felt as if the work the students have done weren't that impressive? There were some lovely projects but overall I felt as if going to the uni for this course would be very unsatisfactory because there wasn't much there to learn, skill wise. Also, the tutors told us that they won't be teaching us how to use different softwares (Adobe Photoshop etc) and that if we wanted to learn it we'll need to sign up to a workshop which kinda disappointed me. From what Ive seen and heard it seems as if you need to kinda chase the opportunities and do a lot of self study(even tho I understand the self study part,) and I didn't want to go to a uni where I wouldn't feel very supported and too relaxed if it makes sense. I was looking for a more industry focused and competitive course. This is also because after I'm done studying in university, I need to put what I gained and achieved into the graphic design industry and the name of the university won't guarantee a career.

As for Loughborough, the projects I saw on the offer holder + open day were so impressive that it made me think of what I'd do once I start going there. The works they've done felt more fitting to what I wanted and definitely required both skills and experience. Also, Loughborough has so much more abroad opportunities for the course and a placement year availability. One of my goals was to do a year abroad and compared to Graphic Branding and Identity (UAL) there were way more destinations available at interesting countries. With Loughborough, so many students were talking about their placement year and study abroad and how they worked with great brands such as PUMA and Walt Disney but I didn't hear much from UAL. When comparing the projects done by the either Universities' students, Loughborough had more diversity with styles and outcomes but UAL's once seemed somewhat more alike to me.

Additionally, London is an expensive city and I didn't want to do a course that I was mildly satisfied with. I don't wanna diss UAL a lot because it is definitely a great Uni for so many courses! It is also located in London so you get to have many opportunities with London's art events etc but for me, the cons were heavier than the pros so I chose Loughborough! 🙂

So overall, Loughborough seemed more competitive and beneficial in many ways. It is also doing very great in general ratings as a top 10 UK uni but UAL is also a top art&design worldwide. I know I talked a bit too much (just a lil) but Loughborough is rated top 1 for graphic design whereas UAL is lower down the charts (around 8-10? Not sure). I think it is really about what you expect from the uni. If you want a more relaxed and free environment UAL might be a great choice but if you want a more strict course, maybe Lboro? Idk, if you read this far thank you lol I just had to let out my opinions 💀💀

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! Your insights helped me view both Unis objectively as they really do have strong pros and cons and I think for your situations, I'd have chosen loughborough, too. I am doing masters, so I am still conflicted as both seem very great options for my needs. I hope the best of luck for your study endeavors<3

Hi! I am loving it!!! I definitely don't regret choosing Loughborough over UAL because of how great the course is here. The course leaders are also so helpful and there wasn't any time where I questioned my uni choice. So many students went off to work with great brands after uni or for their placement year so it makes me feel more secure. If you have any other questions I would love to answer them!
