What qualifications and work experience etc, would you need to become an abbatoir vet?
Thank you
Abattoir vets are in high demand! Obviously you need a vet degree. The government/APHA website has lots of information about the next steps. You need to have the OCQ(V) obtained through the APHA provided by improve international and then await authorisation then apply to abattoir jobs. In placements and rotations you can specifically pick public health rotations to help tailor your career. When at vet school placements such as APHA and various farm placements (husbandry and CEMS) may be helpful to get handling and experience. Any placement that does post mortems will also be valuable at building a relevant knowledge and skills base.
I am absolutely not an expert though so university careers teams and public health/abbattoir lecturers and other abattoir vets would be great people to speak to about this.
Thank you for your reply. Is there anyway of becoming an abbatoir vet without having a veterinary degree?
I studied A - levels, but didn’t do science subjects and therefore wondering if there were any other routes enter the subject? Thanks
You can work in an abattoir and you can be a meat hygiene inspector which does some of the roles an abattoir vet does but you cannot become an abattoir vet without a degree (you need to be registered to RCVS).
um sorry but why do you want to become an abattoir vet with no science or vet med background?? that's like a serial killer backstory
I am just enquiring about if there was a different route into the job. I’ve been looking at taking the A Levels relevant to the job for taking a vet degree. Also, sometimes there are different ways into jobs and I was just seeing. I didn’t mean for it to come across in that way.

Alternatively you can be the head of the abattoir (FBO- food buisness operator) or work generally for the APHA Ah okay, thank you, I’ve had a few different career ideas and just wondering qualifications wise. Thanks for the reply.
I’m a current vet student so if you need any help with related careers I might be able to help you!
So if I was looking into doing this type of role without a vet degree, would it be best to go into the role would it be like meat hygiene inspector? I really fancied doing a vet degree just didn’t have the right qualifications. How would you do about being hygiene inspector? Thanks for the help!

So both the OV (official vet) and the MHI work for the FSA (food standards agency) and have crossover roles. the only person allowed to do inspections of the live animal is the OV but the MHI can do a lot of the other roles the vet can do.
You could always retake a levels or look into foundation courses for veterinary if that’s what you want to do!
