question about bacterial flagella

Bacterial flagella:-

1. Only function if they are helical
2. Can function when they are straight

1st instinct was to say q1 (since helical shape is needed for rotary movement) but idk if q2 would be true (like it would be inefficient but may work e.g. propeller functions...??)
Your instinct with the rotary movement is right: in relation to the size of the bacteria, the fluid in which it is moving is pretty viscous. The helical shape supports a rotational movement around the axis of the flagella and thus gives the bacteria the needed force to move through a viscous fluid.
