distinguish between covalent and ionic combination

You can easily do this with a bit of research.

distinguish between covalent and ionic combination
Ionic bonds: Strong electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions, in which electrons are transferred.
Covalent bonds: Bonds held together by electrostatic attraction shared between negatively charged electrons (but both positively charged nuclei)

Properties (+some differences)
Ionic bonds:

High melting/boiling point

Brittle

Conducts when molten

Simple molecular (cov bonds):

Low melting/boiling point

Brittle

Insulators (Don't conduct)

Weak intermolecular forces

Giant covalent:

Very high melting/boiling point

Some can be hard

Some can be soft

Some can conduct

Some can't conduct
