Mondays last year I had 1 academic period (40 minutes). :p:

 Not too promising, then. As I say, I'm mostly interested in getting this over with now...

These are non-taught 40 mins periods :p:

Roughly how many colleages does Cambridge have?

TheUnbeliever
About 30. One or two only take mature students, though (and one takes only girls).

31 to be exact. Out of which 2 admit postgrads only (Clare Hall and Darwin), 4 admit mature students only (Hughes Hall, Lucy Cavendish, St Edmund’s and Wolfson) and the 3 that admit women only are Murray Edwards (New Hall), Newnham and Lucy Cavendish.

That's a lot more than I expected! So do they specialise in specific subjects or do you choose which one you want?

Most of the colleges do virtually all subjects. A couple don't do one or two specific subjects, but they certainly don't specialize in subjects (although Homerton has a relatively large number of Education students and Robinson - I think - a large number of computer scientists).

Ah, that makes much more sense. :o: My initial reaction was 'why is she so happy about having to work for three quarters of the day?'

I've not heard of any Cambridge colleges specialising, except that Trinity is especially strong in Maths (which TheUnbeliever may yet to experience at his cost :s-smilie: ) This is not like in Oxford where many colleges do have specialties (Balliol for PPE?)

In Cambridge it's more of the case that some colleges will not admit for certain subjects (most commonly Education or Land Economy)

 no.

On a related note, I am getting so sick of people telling me to phone up Cambridge and beg for a place :pinch: I am also sick of people telling me that Cambridge is stupid anyway :pinch:

I made my peace a few months ago, no-one seems to realise that I don't want it dragged up again!

Sorry TSR-ians for that little rant, not at all based on anything you guys have said, just very frustrated after going to school for a bit today.

:hugs: Your more than capable of making your own decision :yep:

There trying to make the situation better but it get's patronising! I'm getting sick of people saying 'sorry about Edinburgh' you try to move on and then your back at square one thinking about it again!

It astounds me that some people would think that would possibly work. As Cambridge themselves say in their admissions handbook:

"Please DO NOT respond sympathetically to anyone who is not holding an offer who asks to be considered at this stage [summer pool]. Applicants may have obtained very good A-level results but they are, in all probability, committed to another institution. We do Cambridge no good at all if we encourage the belief that there is a back way into this University."

Learn something new everyday with TSR :p: I like the individual college idea though, especially with the amount of students going there.

To be fair, most people up here aren't really that familiar with how Cambridge works :p:

Here's another interesting fact you might not have known: Christ's College is famous for giving out Matriculation Offers (EE offers, the lowest that can be made) to the top third/quarter of its offers made. Other colleges can make them, but I've not heard anybody getting one that isn't from Christ's.

Christ's also has showers in its library, which takes the sheen off of that a little. :p:

Well it's more that there is no decision to make :p: As Ukdragon has said, it's futile to phone up and beg. This is probably quite pathetic, but I was with my friend today (who got into Cambridge, passing STEP) at school and just seeing how everyone was so happy for him... bleh :p:

How's everything going with Aberdeen btw? Got much preparation left?

And also exam results balloting for rooms. You'd think with all those advantages for hardcore geeks they'd be right up there on the Tompkins Table. But noooo, their standards have slipped in recent years (whereas Emma has always been in the top 3 for the last 10 years except once :p: )

Hmm...got allocated accommodation yesterday, catered and the reviews aren't so good about it :s-smilie: Still need to change SAAS and that's it, all ready to go...well there's still the packing to do :p: I start on the 19th so will get there eventually

What about you, just the packing to do now?

So I expect Christ's will have a larger amount of applicant's then? The shower fact is a bit weird, people must live in the library :p:

I got accommodation today, have absolutely no idea what it's like apart from that it's damn expensive :p:

I have to fill out a bunch of forms, applying for id cards and stuff like that... chose my modules the other day though! Don't think packing will take long, can't think of much i'd like to take... Not all that interested in possessions really

I start on the 19th too, will actually be in Aberdeen for a bit that day
