Gap Year and Medical Interviews: Traveling Back for an Offer?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently in the midst of planning my gap year after finishing my A-Levels (Y13), and I have a question regarding applying to medicine before I leave in September.

I'll be submitting my application through UCAS and completing the UCAT. However, I'll be spending approximately six months in Australia during my gap year.

My concern is, if I receive a medical interview offer, will I need to cut my time in Australia short and travel back earlier or can I request for an online interview?

How long will I need to prepare for the interview considering I will be away!

I'd greatly appreciate any insights or advice on this matter.

Thank you!

Some places, like Southampton for example, insist on face to face interviews.

Some last year said hopefully face to face and ended up being online (Liverpool) so may say on their websites but may say tbc.

Some are before Christmas and some after.

It would depend on the rules for those med schools you apply to and you wont know that until after you sit your UCAT (if you are going to be strategic).

Perhaps go to Aus after interviews are over?

Re how much time to prepare? You could rock up and do it with no prep, but thats a bit of a risk with your future career. Lots of people worry that 2 weeks notice isnt enough notice to prepare sufficiently. Some of the stuff you will prepare (about you) will be fairly standard and can be applied equally to all interviews (personal qualities, values, role play type stuff, medical knowledge etc, case info, ethics and poss maths etc). Other stuff will be uni specific. Lots of people start prepping pretty much as soon as the applications are in, esp if its an early interview offer/interview date uni they have applied to. Its a how long is a piece of string question. There is a lot to cover to do yourself justice.

Lovely trip to be planning.

Some med schools offer remote interviews, some may not and expect all applicants to attend in person, so it might be something to research before you apply
