''Write a half equation for the formation of chloride ions from chlorine''

Cl2 + 2e? ----> 2Cl?

that is the answer ^^ (chlorine gaining electrons)

however, could you write:

CL2 ----> 2CL+2e- (chloride losing electrons)

As the question doesn't specify which one?

First one should read:

Cl2 + 2e --> 2Cl-

The second one is wrong...

It should read:

2Cl- - 2e --> Cl2

or

2Cl- --> Cl2 + 2e

And, yes both are correct. One is just the reverse of the other. By convention we write the half equations as reductions:

Cl2 + 2e --> 2Cl-
