Wtf, if you add that to the half equation they give you, you get

CH3OH + O2 --> H2O + 2H+ + 2e- + CO2

Doesn't balance, neither do charges? Edit: Nvm it does balance I'm blind.

Can someone shed some light on how you do it please?

Well you have to multiply the oxygen half equation by 1.5 to get 1.5O2 and you go from there and you get the mark scheme answer

what parts did you find hard? have you done the january 2013, it was much easier than that.

Yes, I've done Jan 2013, got 96, I got 84 in June 2012. Some of the questions were in my opinion pretty poorly worded, especially the one about the Strongest oxidising agent, as that seems to suggest 1 reagent, not two. I also screwed up the buffer pH question, as I forgot to change the [conjugate base] and so lost ALL 5 marks!! even though everything else I did, my working and all, was correct. Plus the fact that I lost a mark because I put [Ar] for an electron configuration is bull, because it's correct in every other paper I've done.

I have another question (not related to this one), if you or anyone else can explain would be awesome ;

So in a fuel cell, say a Ni(s) and Ni2+(aq). Why does the Ni(s) gain or lose mass? I really don't understand it.

I mean surely the only transfer we have are electrons but the mass of electrons are pretty much negligible so how is it possible we even have a measurable change in mass?


Well Ni2+ in solution probably has the same mass as Ni, mole for mole, subtract the mass of the water. I say probably. Just as dissolved table salt has a mass (well the ions that make it a salt, Na+ and Cl-), even if it doesnt look like it does.
