Badges are live.... beta rollout!

Poll

What would you like to name the recognition system

Hello everyone,

Exciting news! Our development team are currently working on the beta version of the new TSR recognition system.

This has been designed initially following discussion with members and our mod team via surveys, threads and a combination of 1-2-1 conversations with members and face-to-face time with mods.

More recently we have tested a most helpful/unanswered thread competition and a most popular competition. The feedback you have been provided has been invaluable and has strongly suggested that the direction of your new recognition system is the right one.

Spoiler

I'll say straight up that this OP may, for some of you, become a TL;DR (too long, didn't read ) but I think it's important to share as much information with you as possible at this stage because it is such a big piece of development.

I want you to know that this is a "beta" rollout, it's by no means the finished product. We wanted to share the plans initially and then together we can shape it.

So here goes TSR!

For a long time we have been discussing the options around having a badge system. The ultimate objective of this is to help the community better identify, recognise, endorse and commend our members that helpfully contribute on TSR. We plan to have an array of badges that do this across the board, for different forums, and to celebrate what members have to offer - you are all unique and bring something different to TSR.

We have three badges in development currently which we plan to roll out before Christmas. Each with three levels, the number of levels will continue to evolve over the coming months.

1.

Unanswered threads

2.

Study Help

3.

Number of posts

The initial badge for each one is designed to be easy, then it will become incrementally harder to reach the next level. Again if you think level 2 and 3 are too tricky just let me know or too easy. The badge levels can then continue to increase as achieve more/ post more i.e. level 4, 5, 6......... 25..... 80.

1. Unanswered threads

Based on the number of unanswered threads (threads must be at least 12 hours old)

Spoiler

2. Study Help

Rules

Spoiler

3. Posting badge

Based on the number of posts made across all of TSR except for forum games.

Spoiler

Roll out

Each member will have a cabinet tab on their profile page.

There will be a new notification that will confirm you have been awarded a badge.

We will have a new page which provides information on our badges. In the future we will look to develop something along the lines of this: http://askubuntu.com/help/badges and http://stackoverflow.com/help/badges

After the go-live the first "criteria check" will occur per user. This will only happen once the member has made a post (unfortunately the unanswered thread and study help badge cannot be backdated)

An image relating to badges in their post user information will be displayed on threads.

So what will the badges look like?

Here is a preview of the first phase.

The badge cabinet on a member's profile.

Badge count on a member's user information on a thread - kindly modelled by the bear.

And on mobile pages - check out FKLW:

Questions for you TSR

1.

Please post in the poll and let us know whether you would like to call your recognition system - Badges, shields or something else (post here a new name).

2.

Your thoughts on phase one

4.

How you would like this system to be developed in the future

5.

Any ideas for forum specific badges

6.

Anything else that comes to mind.......

Thanks alot for taking the time to read this and looking forward to building this together with you.

If someone gets banned they should have a 'Ugly Troll' badge added to their profile.
Have to say that I am glad that this has finally been put into beta roll out mode :awesome:
Really excited to see it coming together. I thought it was a great idea, though I'm torn about how kiddy badges sounds. Shields hopefully makes it sound bit less cringey.

It'll be nice now that someone with +10 gems from chat forum can't post in Religion or Study Help and carry the same weight. Will the shields/badges be shown in forum threads by user names? :awesome:
I cannot see the point of this.

Can we have a badge of shame for certain posters on chat who repeatedly post spam or nonsense, or give out bad advice. Can we also have a badge based on post count per day?
What about miserable old people like me who don't want to have "chatterbox" or "clever clogs" added onto their profile once this is eventually rolled out throughout the site? Whilst I'm sure a lot of hard work went into this, it does sound a bit like something you'd see on CBeebies instead of a forum aimed at students of all ages.

Can't you just bring back the pre-2010 rep system instead? Pretty please? :flutter:

An opt-out option like how you can have your current rep hidden?
On the postbit example is it possible to show a relevant shield on postbits of posts made in those areas. So SH badges show on SH posts.

Otherwise I don't see how this helps to flag helpful members posts.

I know some of the names of badges will be a bit like marmite - which is why I've asked if you all have any other suggestions. Some members will like those names, others really won't so it's about getting a balance.

Is there a way that you think we could possibly incorporate that old system into the new one?

Or maybe we should take the moral high ground and just ignore

Only the badge icon will show with the number beside it for now, members will be able to click on it and will be taken to the profile, you'll then be able to view the cabinet

It's not going to float everyone's boat, but if you do have any suggestions just let me know.

What would the badges based on post count per day achieve?

Badges are pretty pointless anyway, especially if half of TSR will hate having them. You may as well go all out and use them as a punishment as well as a reward.

Whilst I still think this is a great idea, throwing it in that one day I hope it shows badges along the username for that section by default so that when someone with the level 3 shield for maths posts in English forums for one like study help people know they're not a specialist.
SHIELDS. Please call them shields. Can we have swords and bows and arrows and crossbows and axes and staffs too? :gah:

Only subs can hide their rep.

This sounds like merits we used to get in Year 7.

I do not wish to be labelled anything without my permission

I dislike the look of the badges, they are too big and seem a bit childish. I'm also not very keen on badges appearing in profiles. I would much rather have small individual badges that appear in the user's information area. I also think you should limit the number badges, having 5 badges that are very hard to achieve would be preferable to having 20+ badges. When I first read the badges idea I was hoping for something reminiscent of the Star Trek ranking pins, simple and elegant!

I am sure you know my views on rewarding people who answer unanswered threads by now. It is not a good idea and it will backfire sooner or later. Unless you are going to continuously monitor the replies to these threads then you will end up with a ton of people spamming and posting irreverent and pre-scripted rubbish just to get the badge.

I am not sure that separating the study help forum from universities is a good idea either, it seems to me that a helpful poster would do the same thing in both. In my experience, new users do not often rep people who have their questions answered so it seems unfair to only count posts which have been repped. You say the culture of rep giving will change over time, but I think that is unlikely.

Oh that was a bit of a negative post, woops. :getmecoat:

I suggest removing the current reputation system and adding badges at the bottom of each post. If someone gets 5 x Most Helpful from 10 members then they get 1 x Most Helpful badge added onto their profile. Five or more people found it helpful so they've had that added onto their profile as recognition. If someone gets 10 x Uninformative or 10 x WUM then the mods look into that and if they think that's a fair assessment they then add 1 x Uninformative to that users profile. If a user has more negative type of badges then their name is red. If a user has more positive type of badges then their name is green.

Makes it very easy to identify those who are posting crap on the forum and also the added layer of the mods having control (could even have mods dedicated to badges etc.) means even if the negative badges are spammed people won't be incorrectly labelled on their profile as the mod will have the final say.

am trying to think of a cool name for these mods...

Why do you bother?

This is just another in the long line of badly thought out developments trying to remedy a problem that didn't really exist.

No matter how badly this goes down it will be hailed as an unqualified success.
