Which degree to become an M & E consultant?

Hi,
I currently have a heating engineering business and I'm planning on enrolling on a degree at Open University this year so I can go down the consultancy path.
The Open University engineering degree's look very generic. Please help if anybody could suggest any courses that specialise in this field even if it's only a HNC/HND.
I can only do part time and travel in the North West so I know my options are very limited but how could I go about this route?
Many thanks.

Not sure what you're referring to when you say M&E consultant although I assumed you meant (mechanical and electrical consultant? I could be wrong though...)

How are your maths skills? The degree will require lots of work so be prepared to be challenged.

If you want to broaden your knowledge base I would probably recommend something broad such as mechanical engineering (however since you specifically mentioned that you have a heating business I assume you're in the building services sector in which case a degree in building services engineering would suit you nicely).

If your maths skills are pretty good (and you have solid A-levels in mathematics and physics/science) then take the degree route BEng or MEng. If on the other hand you have not done A-level maths or physics then I suggest maybe doing some kind of access course that will give you an opportunity to go on to study the degree or an HND/HNC in mech eng then do a top up degree.

Hope this helps

Thank you, that is really helpful.
I have decided to study a HNC then HND at a local college in general Engineering as it is less intense and daunting then enrolling on an 8 year MEng. I can always do a credit transfer afterwards. My wife has a baby on the way and 2 evenings per week at college sounds more realistic for now then doing a distance learning degree whilst being distracted with the baby at home.
Thanks I will look after my HNC/HND for a building services engineering degree but my options are limited having to do part time study.
Yes by M & E I meant mechanical and electrical. I don't know what kind of engineer it is called, I assumed that. Basically I want to design commercial heating and electrical systems as that is my passion in my current business. I'm just not qualified to knowledgeable enough yet to offer these services. I just do designs when I can along with my installation services but I would like to offer consultancy design services in their own right.
Many thanks.

Maybe these guys can help you too? They could advise on a relevant Professional Development Plan

And the closest degree is probably Building Services Engineering?

Ahhh excellent, congratulations with the baby.

I don't know which area you're in but you can have a look at some of these links:
