In part E, how would we know that B is on the left side of A rather than than the right? I assumed it was the left as when I put it on the right side it was virtually impossible for me to work out the area. But surely there is a better way?

I don't think it matters which "side" B is on? The areas would be the same I believe, but it's difficult to see without a sketch. I could be wrong.
