democracy
role of state
equality
modern and classical
individualism and collectivism
democracy

i think it might be about the differences between modern and classical liberalism?

It hasn't come up since January 2010 so it's possible. There was also no liberalism 45 last year too so even more possible.

Is anyone retaking unit 1 politics, how many days will you be spending revising on it? I've only planned on Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning...

These are some of the notes i use at the moment. Its a shame i cant give you the ones i wrote up but honestly you will not be able to read them. I may add some things later from other sources that i have but have not put them in, if i do i will update it here.

These notes are amazing - thank you very much!

Funnily enough I'm not revising the anarchism topic - its too complex and will need someone who's really a good learner on Marxism.

The way I'm doing it - looking through mark schemes and exam model answers - writing them down and then rewriting - it helps to remember the information quicker.

Please write a list of predictions that you think may come up in the 2015 one. Now some may come, some may not - but a good general idea should do the trick.

Why do you think the papers will ignore the Socalism aspect? I'd love to do a 45 mark one. I'm more stronger on Socialism, moderate on Conservatism, weak on Liberalism.

i'm struggling with conservatism, i feel like it's so long and i find it boring. and the questions seem hard as it seems like they're all different?

Dreading this exam
feel like i dont know anything tbh
i find anarchism easiest
How many quotes are you guys learning aid
can you get away with only learning 3 ideologies? I know you can for the 45 marker, but can 3 or more 15 markers come on the same topic?

How is everyone feeling about this subject?

Can't believe how quick the exam is coming.

I'm kind of stuck now with revision, I did the bulk of it the beginning of the year and now I'm just going over and over the same things which I know - but I don't want to get cocky over it.

Completely missed out nationalism as I HATED that subject D:

What worries me is that on both politics exams I have another exam!!!

biology?

Conservatism is a hard subject when it comes to the neo-liberals aspect. My advice, go on exam papers on edexcel - and write down the model answer - read it through and rewrite it - you may get some useful info that you never understood. Do go and read the Cons manifesto as most of their pledges actually resonate with the ideology of Conservatism. Also just pratice Cons questions - the only way you'll do well. They're all the same when it comes to the free market - and they believe in rolling back the state - but that Neo Liberals, and traditional one nation conseratives also support this.

I'm not sure, but Lord Acton's quotes, Adam Smith, Edmund Burke - make a list of these key thinkers and see what they say - good tip.

Do Anarchism then - you could do a 15 marker and a 45 mark on Anarchsim should it come up.
Ah don't worry, its just a exam and you're not doing the EU - That requires a lot more stuff!

You can get away with 3 topics - besides do only revise the topics where you know you have a better chance of succeeding on.
Hello! hope everyones revisions going good
Alot of you are panicking I see.. Me too. Bricking it! But i reckon if you practice all of the past questions and put the knowledge to the indicative content you'll be fine. Has anyones teacher gave them a clear structure for the 45 markers? I know i've been taught for the 15 markers to say 3 really good points with no conclusion but for the 45 markers its abit sketchy. I'm thinking about writing them based on the core themes of the ideology and working from that basis.
any ideas?
thanks.

the quotes are the hardest part. I'm just making essay plans and adding them in as I go from the textbook. Are you revising three topics? i'm prioritising conservatism, liberalism and anarchism.

Those are exactly what I am doing

If the 45 marker is classical liberalism vs modern liberalism what would you include?

I think i'd structure the essay in terms of themes:
.The Individual___
Classical liberals: View individuals as egotistical and selfish. Kant "ends in themselves."
Modern liberals: More optimistic. Self-seeking but perhaps altruistic, realising now that moral obligation has now came into the mix.
. Freedom___
Classical liberals- negative freedom - developed by Isiah Berlin.- the individual should be left alone so that the state cant infringe on individual freedom.
Modern Liberals - positive freedom- the state is used as a platform for equality of opportunity so that everyone has a level playing field. For example, help to buy schemes of the current conservative party.
. Reason___
Classical liberals- The age of reason- conservatism will always be based on rational forward thinking thought therefore this is something both classics and moderns will agree with, they only disagree on the extent to which humans are capable of disrupting the rational world because of the "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." - Lord Acton.
. Justice__
classical liberals- have endorsed strict meritocracy on both economic and moral grounds. economically, they place heavy stress on the need for incentives. morally, justice requires that unequal individuals are not treated equally.
modern liberals- taken justice to imply a belief in some measure of social equality. John Rawls - argued economic inequality is only justifiable if it works to the benefit of the poorest in society.
.Toleration___
classical liberals-Voltaire"I detest what you say but i will defend to the death your right to say it." establishes the set of rules about how humans should behave to each other. deeper harmony when there's competing interests. Tolerant so long as whatevers being done is within the paradigm of liberalism.
Modern liberals- Share similar beliefs but perhaps go one step further with advocating pluralism and accepting the emergence of multiculturalism.
***conclusion***
The case of classical liberalism VS modern liberalism has its disputes amongst individuals, freedom and justice. For toleration and reason you could use these as your counterargument in that liberalism is still upholding values of being "difference blind" etc etc.

Dont know whether this helps. Just a quick plan i put together. Tried to put in some thinkers in there too
