English degree without A level English language?
Hi, I am currently doing my AS levels which are A level English Language, A level English Literature, A level French and A level Philosophy & Ethics. I would like to drop A level English Language after my first year because, although I do like it, I love my other subjects more. I would like to know could I still do an English degree (language & literature) with only an AS in English language (I will have an A level in English literature)?
You should be fine if you're applying for English - they actually ask for English Literature over English Language.
If you're applying for Linguistics however, I'm pretty sure you need to keep English Language.

It really depends on the course requirements. I am currently applying for English at Uni and when I have been looking through the requirements the majority of courses I saw required one or the the other. But mainly literature.
As a general rule, especially with the Russell Group Uni's (what I found anyway) is that English Lit is seen as the 'better' A-Level to have so its better to have literature rather than language if you are doing non-linguistics (specific) degree.
Not that its relevant but try not to tell yourself I am definitely dropping one subject. I know tonnes of people who thought they knew exactly what they were going to drop and after mocks and even after the actual exams they changed their mind. So try to keep yourself open about it.
I don't know which exam board you are for your English AS's but I was AQA (Victorian literature wider reading) for Lit and AQA (grouping texts, gender, power and technology language) for lang. I got A's in both and didn't drop them for at A2 so if you want to contact me about anything please feel free to PM me!

At Reading, we're looking for an A level with 'English' in the title - Lit, Lang or Lang&Lit. We know not all schools offer English Language.

Philosophy is 10x meaner and 100x more complicated than A-level. Our lecturer told us to forget everything that we learned because it was basically BS: and it most definitely is true. It's like starting again, which makes it 10 times trickier.
Yeah it's defo an interesting degree, but depends on what kind of philosophy the uni specialises in. My uni specialises in continental philosophy so most will be based on that.
Some focus on medieval philo such as Medieval Philosophy, Philosophy of Witchcraft, etc etc.
It's good fine! I defo recommend it!
I avouded this conundrum by doing the combined a level of English Language & Literature
Far preferred literature, did my BA in English Literature, about to do my MA in English literature aha.
Also i 100% agree that Literature is the better looked upon A-Level, at the time i just wasn't certain
