Durham offer holders 2016!

Heeeey I also received an offer from Durham I guess on 20th of February or something i'm not sure actually but anyway .

Offer: A*AA
College applied to/allocated to: Collingwood.

Is anyone going to the Open Days on 22nd or something? Also I've been hearing some negative comments on Collingwood even though it seemed to be one of the liveliest colleges for me -my own opinion- do you guys know anything on that?

Awww so cool, are you a residential or not? And what I've heard from a few students is that apparently Collingwood's the least "sophisticated" and that being from Collingwood may cause trouble with socialising with people from the other colleges.

Yes, I'm going to the residential! I know some people who have friends in Collingwood and they say they're really happy! So I guess we'll see for ourselves once we go up there☺️

Well I have a long term medical condition (type 1 diabetes), and on my UCAS form I had to state it. Then I sent UCAS off, a few weeks later Durham asked me to fill in a form about my condition and I had to explain it etc, then I got an offer a few months later. Each university has now sent me forms I have to fill in to give evidence etc but Durham and Lancaster were the only uni's to lower the grade boundaries which I didn't expect, but they acknowledge that it effects my education. Hope this helps :smile:

Also, I'm a little nervous about sharing a room because of all the medication I take - do you know if they accommodate for this? Thanks for all your help!

Wel I got put in van mildert college where you don't share a room. You can change colleges but only in the case of a spelcal circumstance which yours is, I'd email them explaining your situation and you should be fine, no problem :smile:

I am thinking about firming Durham, but I am not sure. As for the insurance I really have no idea. Do you have any advices? As I am an European student, unfortunately, I am not able to come and visit the universities. i am mostly interested in prestige/graduate prospects (for Business and International relations)International outlookThe friendliness of the placeThe type of lifestyleI would be very happy with a great degree and a welcomimg community that you can easily bond with.If you cam share your opinions amd maybe some insights of these places I would be more than grateful. As far as prestige is concerned Newcastle is a RG uni and Lancaster isn't. I know my friends loved the combined honours taster day at Newcastle, although I don't know anything about Business and IR there. Newcastle has one of the best nightlife scenes anywhere. Whenever I've visited Newcastle Uni there's been quite a few international students. I may be bias as a Geordie and the fact my mum went to Newcastle, also I can't say anything about Lancaster. Personally I've firmed Durham and insured Newcastle, but I'm a maths applicant.

I would second this, Newcastle has a better night life and is a Russel group so without sounding pompous it is a more respected uni. But both are nice so you should go wherever you think you will fit in best

Hi, I'm currently torn between firming Newcastle and Durham for English lit. I'm from Newcastle myself and know the area well and it's a great, friendly and safe city with a great uni, but Durham is slightly more academic I think and offers a collegiate system which may appeal more to you. Both universities have their good points but I'm not making a firm decision until I've been to both post offer days :smile:

I don't know if anyone has experienced this with Durham, but I am disgusted by their method of responding to UCAS applications. I didn't get an offer from Durham, nor Oxford, yet Oxford had at least the courtesy to send me a e-mail to thank me for my efforts and for my application; as for Durham, it was the rejection on my UCAS track! I have been waiting since October for a reply, I'm aware they have till the 21st March, however the fact that I have had to change my options last minute alongside the fact they couldn't even bother to send an e-mail, which no other university has done according to friends, has left me unimpressed, considering the amount of time and effort students put into their personal statements.

Newcastle Uni isn't that spread out over the city actually, it has its own little part of the city. The acommodation may be a little more spread out (again I don't know Lancaster) but it just depends where abouts you live and you'll always be with other students because they offer students accomodation in blocks together, and they're in the process of building even more. One of the blocks is renowned for being party central. Newcastle has a good social atmosphere and a lot of societies within the university.

Newcastle is Russell group which means it's a top 24 UK research university, and you can't trust league tables that much. I can guarantee that the positions will vary a lot depending on which publication you're using to compare them. Business is also not a traditional course and so the RG Unis don't necessarily have an upper hand because they won't have been running the course any longer than other Unis. The RG Unis tend to be older and therefore have more established courses, but that only really stands for traditional subjects such as maths, history etc.

Both Unis will both be in friendly areas because Northerners are known for being very warm and welcoming.
