um hang on, arent u meant to test 3.75 and 3.75 is less than 34, therefore x has to be in between 3.75 - 3.8

Ah I see! I actually wrote down the correct working out in the exam but put the incorrect answer in the box! That should cost me one mark. Other than that I know I lost approximately 4 other marks according to the mark scheme. Thank you for correcting my mistake.

X3-5x=34.
Assuming X=3.7 would give an answer of 32.153, its difference from 34 being 1.847. However, assuming X=3.8 would yield an answer of 35.872, its difference from 34 being 1.872. Since the difference between 34 and the value of X as being 3.7 is smaller than the value at 3.8, X=3.7.
Hope this helps.

However, your'e looking at an equation with the highest power being 3, the change in increase gains as you input a greater number so the fact that you said 3.8 has a larger difference still doesnt prove that it is further away from the true value.
On the other hand, it is a fact that as the value of x increases in the equation, the numerical value also increases so the only way we can find whether x is closer to 3.7 or 3.8 is by using the midpoint 3.75, if the value is smaller than 45 when inputting 3.75 then we know that x is larger than 3.75, hence any number above 3.75 would be closer to 3.8 than 3.7

3 marks for stem and leaf diagram 1 mark for 9/20

Apologies, I'm fairly sure it was 2 marks for part two.

There was a big debate earlier, i put 3.7 but either way, a few marks cant make a massive difference

if you did it how u said u did it and showed that, you should get marks tbh

Anyone know how many marks I will get for putting 9/20 for the 2nd question instead of 0.45?

My maths teacher told me 9/20 was fine
cheers for this it put my mind to rest. just wondering about the marks for each one

It's an anomaly, a big one.

Yeah, I know, but the papers this year seem roughly the same difficulty.

Heres my working, but a lot of people contradict me with the 3.75 method

The equation - x^3 - 5x = 34has a solution between 3 and 4
Use trial and improvement method to find this solution
Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place
You must show all your working

--------my answer--------
(before all this below i did 3.5 and 3.6)
3.7^3 - 5(3.7) = 32.153
34 - 32.153 = 1.847
So 3.7 is 1.847 away.

3.8^3 - 5(3.8) = 35.872
35.872 - 34 = 1.872
So 3.8 is 1.872 away.

This shows 3.8 being 0.025 further away than 3.7. 3.7 is closer. Therefore, the answer is 3.7, even though 3.75 gives an answer smaller than 34.

Same. I lost:
-1 mark on the trial and improvement question
-2 marks on the quadratic formula question :3
Yet I got the last answer :/. Goes to show how silly mistakes can lose marks!

if you did it how u said u did it and showed that, you should get marks tbh

im hoping around 2/3 out of 4 for method
Any Foundation Unofficial mark schemes? Thanks
anyone know the marks available for each question?

No, it was a lot easier.

Well, I guess it's subjective. We'll have to see.
i got 3.7 too ,, for trial and improvement someone please let me know if its 3.8 or 3.7 i was very sure
