A-level Maths Study Group 2022-2023

Welcome to the A-level Maths Study Group! :woo:

This is where you can chat to others students taking your subject as you prepare for your A-level exams this summer

What can I do in these groups?

Almost anything! If you need help with a certain topic, want to rant about something you are struggling with or just want to support other students who are trying to prepare, this is the place for you. We want these to be a useful place for everyone no matter what you're looking for!

What can't I do in these groups?

Asking or offering copyright papers is against our site rules, and so is taking conversation off-site to do these things. Any posts doing this will be removed. That's the only rule :naughty:

Ice Breaker questions if you want to use them!

> What exam board are you on? (Vote in the poll as well!)

> What bits of the course are you feeling confident with?

> What areas are you struggling with a little?

> Have you found any resources online that have helped you prepare?

specifications:
AQA - AS // A-level //
Edexcel - AS // A-level //
OCR- AS // A-level //
MEI- AS // A-level //
CIE- 2019 exams // 2020 exams onwards
WJEC- AS/A-level //

Good luck with the next few months. Remember, ask for help, support where you can and together we can do this!

my school teaches all of pure (Y1+2) before beginning statistics and mechanics so i’ve only really done pure which i’m pretty solid on. stats and mech are alright so far but we’re only on the first few topics

> What areas are you struggling with a little?
Y2 integration is a killer but getting to grips with it

> Have you found any resources online that have helped you prepare?
PMT question banks

What exam board are you on?

Edexcel

> What bits of the course are you feeling confident with?
Applieds been pretty good till now...(probably gunna jinx myself..)
pures been okay, favourite parts is probably integration and differentiation

> What areas are you struggling with a little?
Anything trig related..not really struggling just forgetful so lots of mistakes

> Have you found any resources online that have helped you prepare?

PMT, savemyexams and youtube!!
What exam board are u on?
Edexcel
What parts of the course are u feeling confident in?

What parts of the course do u find a little challenging?

What resources do you use?
The textbook, exams solutions and PMT topic booklets!
What exam board are you on?
Edexcel IAL

What bits of the course are you feeling confident with?
Stats, part of pure (functions, rational expressions), part of mech.

What parts of the course do u find a little challenging?
Moments in mechanics

What resources do you use?
PMT

edexcel

> What bits of the course are you feeling confident with?
stats and mech (i also take physics)

> What areas are you struggling with a little?
parts of pure (if i listened in lessons i might understand)

> Have you found any resources online that have helped you prepare?

i havent been doing much work recently but pmt is always my go to for most of my subjects
I'm currently in year 12 but due to picking Further Maths I'm sitting the actual A-Level Maths this academic year with the upper sixth. We've just completed AS maths but I'm completely lost regarding most of stats and exponentials. Does anyone have any particular tips for these topics? I've tried watching youtube videos and doing practice questions but it never sticks with me so I end up at square one again.
My exam board is AQA if that helps.
>What exam board are you on?
- ocr

> What bits of the course are you feeling confident with?
- it always alternates depending on the topics, but in general more confident with applied stats and mech

> What areas are you struggling with a little?
- pure, but in reality everything

> Have you found any resources online that have helped you prepare?

Edexcel

> What bits of the course are you feeling confident with?
All of the pure that we've covered so far. Not much struggle.

> What areas are you struggling with a little?
All of the Stats that we've covered. And not a little. A LOT.

> Have you found any resources online that have helped you prepare?

DrFrostMaths is ok. MyMaths is great. MathsWatch is a godsend though (its only available on school subscription)
Guys anyone know to implicitly differentiate ln(x-1)? Would I use the product rule? Can I expand it? (I don't think it is allowed but it is a possibility)

I think you would use chain rule? differential of ln multiplied by differential of the bracket

Edexcel

Pure and mechanics (doing physics helps a lot with mechanics)

> What areas are you struggling with a little?
Statistics, mainly just remembering sampling vocabulary

> Have you found any resources online that have helped you prepare?
Youtube, PMT, maths genie, textbooks, mark schemes
I'm stuck on a section of questions in my textbook. I have attempted the first few questions but they do not match the given answers and working out isn't provided. Can someone help me solve them?

Many thanks!

here are the first two questions:

2a) Integrate e^(-x) (1+e^x) dx
2b) Integrate 5e^x (2+e^(3x)) dx

what subtopic of integration is this? I am currently doing integration so I may know how to do this
