A Level: Electro Spray Ionisation question...

During this process, does the sample molecule gain a proton or does an electron from the high voltage grid collide with the molecule causing an electron to be knocked out from its outer shell resulting in a positive charge? I thought the latter occurred but I just read somewhere that the molecule gains a proton.
Thank you in advance.

Ionisation involves the loss of electrons.

Both methods are used. I refer you to this article written for teaching AQA MS
