Hi Margherita,

It's great to hear you're interested in the MA in Producing for Film & TV!

I recently graduated from BA Media Arts at Royal Holloway and specialised in Producing, so I can let you know a bit about the department. The course leader, Gillian, is fantastic. She's incredibly knowledgeable, supportive and always offering a really professional insight. Similarly, one of the Producing lecturers, Mike, has some amazing experience behind him. One thing that really stands out about the producing team is that there's a huge focus on teaching the realities of the industry and preparing students for real world skills, which is invaluable in a course like this.

I had the pleasure of sitting in one of the MA Producing classes during my final year, and it was a lot of fun. The class was working on compiling a web-series project, and the whole team was so supportive and collaborative with each other. Their classes were based in Bedford Square in London, which meant that it was quite common for industry professionals to come and in give a talk to the students. During the class I sat in, Sarah Gavron (the director of Suffragette) came in and gave a really interesting talk on the production of the film and development of the script. I was blown away at the level of discussion that came out of this, and how interactive the session was. The slightly smaller class sizes makes sure that discussions like this one were really open to everyone's questions and a thorough discussion.

In terms of the wider department, the support and variety of knowledge from lecturers and technical staff made my time studying Media Arts so amazing. There's always someone who can give you some fresh insight and bring something new to your work, and always some new opportunity to get involved in during your free time. Some of my best university memories were a group of us in the edit labs at 11pm getting a final cut finished off.

If you have any questions at all I'd be happy to chat with you more about this!

I am really interested in the course since it seems to combine theoretical teaching with some practical stuff but I was wondering if there is any involvement during the course with some actual filmmaking company.

Hi Margherita,

I don't believe there is any work experience as part of the structure of the course, but the course conveners really encourage and guide you to find work placements and internships. The Careers Centre is also a really helpful resource for this, as they can help you to develop your CV and Cover Letter writing skills. Past students on the course have had work experience in the Disney Studios, Paramount, Channel 4 and Warner Bros.

Sorry for my late answer ... do you think it would be possible to talk with any former student of the MA? Thanks

Hey Margherita,

Have you checked out the Postgraduate page on our website? You can sign up to Skype with a postgraduate student, though we wouldn't be able to guarantee they would be studying the exact same course. However, we also offer Postgraduate Open Evenings, where you can come onto campus, have a look around, and chat one on one with a member of the relevant department.

Unfortunately since I don't live in the UK this is a bit difficult.
I have already read everything on the website. But I was looking for some people who had direct experience with the course.
