Digital media and social media

Happy new year everyone. I run a youtube channel and it's my passion to the extent that I would like to do a degree in this area but I'm not sure what's out there. I want to do something practical and industry focused. I wondered what courses people recommend. I havent seen many social media degrees apart from Uni of East London but I'm not sure if East London is the right place for me. Should I look into Digital Media or Digital Production instead?

What kind of content do you make? What's the focus of your channel?

Thanks for responding. It's still a small channel, 500 subscribers but it's focused on Lego. So I build lego models, do product reviews and make popular charecters from TV and films using common parts. But I really enjoy the process of thinking up ideas, planning scripts, filming etc
Hi,

Having a passion and career goal is a great place to start when looking for degrees.

If you're looking to improve your skills in filmmaking, you may want to check out our BA (Hons) Film & Screen Arts program. This degree will allow you to delve into specialised techniques such as cinematography, production design, screen direction, sound production, set-building, lighting design, editing, visual effects, social media production, and experimental image-making. Hi @HelloKitty786,
I recently graduated from the film and television course at the University of Wolverhampton and now work in a content creator role where I make content for various social platforms like Youtube, Tiktok and Instagram.
My university undergraduate degree course provided me with the knowledge and skill set to make better content. I worked on narrative films, documentary films, music video and live broadcasts, I looked at the different editing styles and learned many valuable techniques. The course was massively practical, I would be filming every semester without fail.
While the course is not specifically focused on producing social media, I picked up many transferrable skills, which allowed me to adapt to making social media content with ease. These skills were gained from my experience in camera operation and thinking and planning shots together, directing different forms of media and editing a range of types of media.
Also the course is about making the films and content that you want to make so when it comes to your final project in your final year you choose what the project is and plan towards producing it completely and then work with your class mates to make it.

I hope this helps! 🙂

If YouTube is your passion, a Digital Media, Digital Production, or Film & TV Production degree could be a great fit. Universities like Ravensbourne, Bournemouth, or Falmouth offer hands-on, industry-focused courses. The digital world moves fast, and many YouTubers sharpen their skills with online courses on Udemy, LiveX, Skillshare, or Coursera in editing, storytelling, and YouTube growth. A hybrid approach, a media degree plus self-directed online learning could give you both credibility and real-time skills. What’s your content niche? That might help narrow down the best path!
