The Official 2023 Training Contract Thread

As with the vacation schemes, the next cycle of training contract applications has now officially started since Allen & Overy, notoriously first out of the blocks, has opened applications for 2023 TCs.

Best of luck to everyone!

Do you have to apply for a training contract before finishing university?

No of course not, but if you want to try and walk straight into a funded LPC and then a job, it helps to. There's no wrong path, it just depends on what you want to do.

I am interested in pursuing a career related to law, but I do not know anything about the process to get into law, and am currently studying computer science at university.

Then you're really quite perfectly placed. I'd recommend doing a lot of research and going to law firm presentations at university or open days/evenings at their offices, as well as considering applying to vacation schemes at firms you like the look of from these exposures.

Thank you for for letting me know. I am considering a career in research, with a specialism in cyber security, and possibly law enforcement or forensics.

Ah you're looking at legal academia? Given your non-law background I'd definitely recommend getting some legal study in in which case. For law enforcement, you could volunteer as a special constable or see if your university has any links with the police force. At my uni, it's possible to volunteer as like a neighbourhood educator on issues like avoiding burglary etc. Unfortunately, I have no idea about forensics!

Thank you for the advice. I will check if my university has links with the police force; do courses related to law online and look for vacation schemes.

No worries. Best of luck!

I have found an interesting vacation scheme and would like to apply for it, but it requires an LPC. I discovered it is for mental health, but am not sure.

Am I be eligible for the scheme?

Hey how is everyone tackling A&O's new law question? I'm a little stumped.

I tried to think about a current issue/topic which interested and was relevant to me and then considered a possible law which would be related to that - I was going for something personal and that I knew about, plus tried to think about both the impact and realistic nature of the law I was proposing. (I'm actually no longer applying so didn't get round to the details of the law I'd propose, but that was my approach!)

Hope it helps!

No, but can you clarify what an LPC is?

It’s the Legal Practice Course taken after the qualifying law degree.
Is anyone applying to Bird & Bird?

I am!
I do still have one final application for 2022 (recruitment delayed because of Covid). But I'm beginning to get things together for the next cycle now - halfway through putting together dossiers on the firms I'm applying to.

Good luck to everyone!
