Welcome to the A-Level Chemistry Study Group for those sitting the exams in 2021. Here you can chat with fellow students, share resources, ask questions, discuss exams or even moan about the subject! A-Level Chemistry is really not that hard if you put the effort in. I wish you all the best in your A-Levels.
Feel free to introduce yourselves and get to know one another a bit!
Here are a few ice-breakers to get the conversation started: What exam board are you taking? What's your favourite topic in the course so far? And your least favourite topic? What are you hoping to study at university?
What exam board are you taking? AQA What's your favourite topic in the course so far? It's hard to pick just one! I like all the topics! And your least favourite topic? Reaction mechanisms What are you hoping to study at university? Chemistry!
Really? I've attempted a few OCR questions. I have seen the mark schemes are quite picky and the wording of the question can sometimes be quite confusing.
Yeah. A good example of picky mark schemes is the definition of the enthalpy of hydration. In the specification it says that it's the enthalpy change when 1 mole of gaseous ions dissolve in water, but in the mark schemes it says that you have to put that they form hydrated ions. So the mark scheme doesn't even match up to the specification sometimes 😂

Thank you so much. I hope your a level chem studies are going well!
No problem!
They are going well, thanks for asking. I hope yours are too! Feel free to ask anything on this thread that you don't understand. If I have covered the topic, I will be more than happy to help!

Mine are going sort of ok😅 we’re doing acids and bases currently which I’m finding hard. We’re also doing polymers which is quite a nice topic. What about you?

Oh, I believe we are starting acid and bases after the Christmas holidays. My teacher has rushed through Organic, so I need to revise that a lot.
What exam board are you taking? Edexcel International A Level What's your favourite topic in the course so far? Ionic Bonding And your least favourite topic? Nomenclature What are you hoping to study at university?
What's your favourite/least favourite topic so far?
I really enjoy the physical side of chemistry - so my favourite topics are equilibria and Kc and Kp calculations and I also like the practical side of it. I am not a fan of organic (although I like the mechanisms) mainly because of how hard it is to apply knowledge to certain questions and I prefer memorising content rather than problem-solving.
