That is a new discipline that was accepted by the IOC for this year. The traditional Japanese martial art has two sections, the Kumite and the Kata. While the Kata are a demonstration detailed pattern of movements, the Kumite is the one for the battles with fists and feet. Both sections are separated in two genders and in three different weight classes. The 36 best Karatekas win a medal.

Nice thread Kallisto, I'm so excited to watch this! Do you know which day it starts?
Look at the schedule, it begin pretty late, at the 5th August. What do you like more? the Katas (demonstrated imaginery fight) or the Kumites (real fights)?
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The first bronze medalist for the women's kata is Grace Lau from HK! It's our 5th medal in Tokyo! Watched the match on channel 82 (TVB J2) and her brother was one of the commentators. He was really proud of her.
What a shock for the German Jonathan Horne! he has broken his arm in the second fight and is out of the competition! I feel really pity for him and wish that he gets well soon!
