Does anyone know what happens regarding accommodation at hertford? Haven't been told anything!

I'm pretty sure we live in college, I haven't been sent anything either though.

Does anyone know the best lounges / nightclubs (for Ox students) in Ox?

Duke of Cambridge is good for cocktails, as well as House.

You'll probably frequent your college bar a lot. College bar crawls can be fun as well. The Union bar is usually a bit quieter, but a good place to meet up with friends.

Oxford students tend to go to different clubs on different nights really. Well that's what I've found.

Camera is good, as a poster above mentioned. Tends to be Tuesdays (since Kukui shut down) and Saturdays (that may just be my college though). One of the nicer clubs.

Park End (Lava Ignite) on Wednesday nights - for their infamous cheese floor.

Thursday is Bridge - personally Bridge annoys me. It's too thin and the queue is ridiculous. You end up in like this other bar if you get there too late, and they then let you up into Bridge. But it's a big night out.

Friday - Wahoo... maybe Camera.

Not sure where Lola Lo fits in - haven't been since it reopened.

Kukui was a relatively popular club, but it closed down last Hilary. Not sure if anything else is opening in its place.

Purple Turtle is the Union owned club. I've not been, but some people seem to love it.

Umm there's a few smaller bars/clubs.

I don't like Clems.

You'll soon find the clubs you like, and the one you just put up with because every else is going. And which nights fit in with your work, sports/societies nights out etc

Don't forget about bops either - depending on how often your college holds them.
Hmmm just received an interesting letter from college explaining that because I am still not 18, among other things:

a) My parents will be consulted in matters of my health.
b) My parents will be contacted to settle any of my debts.
c) And this is the real bummer, I am not permitted to enter college premises where alcohol is served a.k.a college bar (I am not allowed into the college bop).

Any other poor soul in a similar state as me? Do they actually card you even during Freshers' week? I turn 18 just 2 weeks after 0th week.

Well, that just put a damper on the first month and a half for me. Wonderful. From what I know, the pubs don't care much but I heard that the clubs are going to card for the week.

Haven't had anything said yet but I'm in the same situation :frown: and I have a term of it to get through! What annoys me more is that I don't even really want to be drinking, just to be able to go out with my friends :sigh: Ah well, I'll find other things to do I'm sure...

Ditto I am not a big binge drinker or anything of that sort. But it seems quite unfair if your entire college is downstairs in the bar and you're forced to sit alone in your room for an entire night.

My sentiments exactly. Socializing after nightfall is going to be somewhat more difficult for us methinks.

To all the above worried about not being able to be in the college bar etc don't worry. If they're going to be strict about the college bar rule, most colleges have 'alternative' freshers, with events that aren't held in bars and clubs so you'll be able to go to those. My college had midnight ice hockey, cinema trips, things like that. You'll also find you'll have subject drinks/meals, and stuff with your college family, that will be held in people's rooms and restaurants/coffee shops open late night etc. Besides this there are loads of events during the day where you can meet everyone so don't panic too soon
Sorry for lurking, but I just want to say a big congratulations to everyone who got into Oxford this year

You'll struggle getting into clubs, some might not bother ID'ing and might just accept your BOD card, but 9 times out of 10 they'll ID. However, I reckon you'll be able to get away with getting served in the college bar, I've certainly never been ID'd in mine and so I can't see a way they'd know you're under age. And there's almost certainly no way they can keep you out of the college bop!!!

Chequers and the Three Goats Heads both ID fairly strictly, as I found when they turned down my (perfectly valid) Citizencard ID because it "looked fake". Never mind the fact I was nearly 19, the card said I was an adult in three places and had the 'Pass' hologram, and in the former instance I was decked out in full sub fusc for Matriculation. I ask you

That said, I haven't had the same trouble anywhere else, and your college bar never IDs you - and if they do your Bod Card is enough. Plus like an above poster said, there will be plenty of non-alcoholic fresher's week activities which are just as fun and a great way to meet people, so you'll still enjoy yourself trust me!!! I especially recommend midnight ice-hockey, it's insanely fun because no-one can skate

Hey! I got through Oxford, starting in Oct  MSc Biomedical Engineering. Hope this question doesn't sound too silly... but I was wondering, what kind of clothes am I supposed to carry. I mean, what is the campus dressing style like? Formal, Casual, Smart casual?
the college sent me some modules about health...the family doctor services registration and then something from banbury road medical center...
did your college send you the same?
do you think i have to send it back to them or somewhere else?

I'm not sure how they'd police the college bar... If it's anything like ours, you'll never see a figure of 'authority' in there. Aside from the barman. They don't ID... Unless they've given the barman a picture of you with 'DO NOT SERVE' on it. Seems unlikely.

I'm not saying you should disobey the rules, but I'm not so sure how they'd check.

Also lots of freshers week involves prelashing in people's rooms. So that you can join in with.

I think all colleges have to provide alternative activities on nights during freshers - as others have already mentioned. Apart from the first night (which may well be a college bop for you), there will definitely be other people not going out. And it's not all lame stuff, as others have pointed out. We recommend to freshers that they stay in at least one night anyway, and hence have good stuff on every night that doesn't involve drinking.

With regard to clubs, it'll be so hard to get in. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when they want just your ID, just your bod card, or both. Freshers week will be especially tight.

After that you've not got long...

One of my friends only 17 last freshers, but he had a good fake ID. He definitely went out a lot before he turned 18.

Pubs wise - it's hit and miss again. As long as they don't ID on the door (which most don't), you could probably get away with just going with people and not drinking. At least then you're socialising.

I think it depends how old you look - I've never been IDed in the Turf, Blenheim or Eagle and Child. But I have been in Chequers.

But I think the thing to remember is that there is a LOT more to freshers week than going out. In fact the nights out in freshers won't be the best ones all term. During the day and at dinner, lunch etc are just as good times to socialise.

The risks of a fake id are that (a)if it's not a good one and (b) they ask for your Bod Card and ID... It could happen, especially on 'Oxford Uni' nights in clubs.
Exeter, stop sucking. :frown: I fear I'll be going on holiday the day the forms arrive! Well, they did say end of August. By my reckoning, that is now. NOW, DAMMIT!

Arghhhhh I just want to apply for accommodation. Anybody else thinking double set sounds way better than a single room?

Well I'm sure you could do the time honoured underage thing, sit in the university parks with gallons of white cider.

Bow tie practice is always useful. Getting quicker now, must be able to tie it without a mirror by October. Definitely more important than my French reading.

It took me half an hour to do mine for prom, and even then it was pretty lousy. Methinks I need the practice :s-smilie:
