You are trying to make 13x1-3x equal to something. 0.970.97 is sensible as this means x=0.01x = 0.01.

Remember the binomial expansion of (1+y)n(1+y)^n is only valid for y<1|y| < 1 so you need to choose x carefully.


But if i chose something smaller than x=0.01 would i still get marks?

Bad choice.

97=97000997×(13×0.001)\displaystyle 97 = \frac{97000}{997} \times (1-3 \times 0.001)
