But you have somewhat more control in those situations and are more likely to survive them than you are a plane crash

Tbh, most plane crashes happen in very abnormal conditions, as in it's rare for them to just drop out the sky. For example, the Indian crash today occurred on landing at a runway which was in a mountainous region surrounded by forest with a vertical drop off a cliff one side. There was no room for error, and even the most experienced pilots have experienced problems landing there from what the news seems to report.

It takes a culmination of lots of different circumstances that rarely occur to all happen at the same time for things like this to happen usually.
