North and South Korea Exchange Fire

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/southkorea/8153100/North-Korean-attack-on-Yeonpyeong-Island-is-worst-against-civilians-in-20-years.html

Looks like South Korea is starting to shell North Korea as well.

There better not be war as that might stop GSL.

This is really, really not good. Attacking military targets is one thing (and would be worrying enough), but they've gone and aimed at civilians this time round.

This is very, very bad.

Why do they need to trade fire? Can't they make their own?

wow this is actually awesome. this world could do with some proper war to make it more lively.

He will if Korea goes to war again; Team America will be the first on the scene.
North Korean artillery hits South Korean island

South Korea says it has returned fire after North Korea fired dozens of artillery shells at one of its border islands, killing two marines.

The South's military was placed on its highest non-wartime alert after the shells landed on Yeonpyeong island.

The North said it did not fire first in the incident. Two South Korean marines and four civilians were also injured.

Analysts say this is one of the most serious clashes since the Korean War ended without a peace treaty in 1953.

There have been occasional cross-border clashes since, but the latest incident comes at a time of rising regional tension.

North Korea's reclusive leader Kim Jong-il is thought to be ill and trying to ensure the succession of his youngest son.

On Saturday, North Korea also showed off what it claimed was a new uranium enrichment facility - potentially giving it a second route to a nuclear weapon.

The move prompted the US special representative for North Korea, Stephen Bosworth, to rule out the resumption of six-party talks on nuclear disarmament that Pyongyang abandoned two years ago.

**** north korea.
The North would "continue to make merciless military attacks with no hesitation if the South Korean enemy dares to invade our sea territory by 0.001mm"

so callipers are about to be issued to all north korean military personnel?

personally i see another war coming pretty soon. as soon as Kim Jong-un officially takes charge, i reckon he's going to go all out with silly little shows of strength which will just escalate into a full on war

Who started this? The North claim that they fired in retaliation:

"Despite our repeated warnings, South Korea fired dozens of shells from 1 p.m. ... and we've taken strong military action immediately," the North's official KCNA news agency said in a brief statement.

It could be, but North Korea would lose any war with the South and if it starts it, it risks China simply ignoring any hostilities regardless of its preference for NK as a buffer.

SK won't force a war unless it absolutely has to due to the fact that NK would be a massive financial burden and despite a strong desire for reunification, practicality speaks louder and absorbing NK would be a humanitarian and financially crippling exercise.

Just depends really. Neither side especially wants a war but human beings are strange creatures prone to unpredictable bouts of emotion so who knows, could happen.

They did attack a military target. Some nearby houses were destroyed, sure, but the only deaths were military.

News reports are stating that some civilians are in serious condition so that may change.
From the BBC...

1111: South Korea says it was conducting a military drill in the area before North Korea fired, Reuters reports.
They should just settle this with a Starcraft 2 match. Winner takes all.
