OOOOH what year are you in? I am finding it ok. Got my oral on the 8th and a bit nervous about it, language exams didn't go amazing :s-smilie: I think I'll have him next year for Modern French Narrative, unless I am very mistaken.

I am actually a masters student (MA in European Literatures). Bradley taught on both of my core units (Balzac's Old Goriot and Flaubert's Madame Bovary for nineteenth century and Sartre's Nausea for twentieth century), and leads one of my optional units (Voltaire's Candide). He is easily one of the best lecturers not only in French but in modern languages itself so appreciate him!

I am sure you will do fine in your oral. I have been invigilating a number of modern language undergraduate exams this week (and next week) so I know how you feel. I had to look after a second-year Italian student this morning who was translating something for almost four hours!

Ahh nice! I know a girl called Stacie on that course, actually. I've never had Bradley but always heard amazing things about him. We did Candide for Literature this year actually, great text.

I might have seen you then! Oh, poor guy, I find one hour of translating bad enough! I haven't started oral prep yet....woopsie, best get on it :s-smilie:

How do you know Stacie?

You probably would not have seen me (shame!...) since I look after people who need more time and who use computers etc., and I have not looked after any French students.

We're both student ambassadors, and have often worked on the same events  Ahh that's a bit rubbish. Do you speak any other languages/study texts in another language? I see you did English as your first degree. Have you enjoyed your course in general? I'm still uncertain as to whether I want to do a Master's or not.

I spoke too soon. I looked after a female fourth-year French student this morning!

On the European Literatures programme we study loads of different texts in translation: French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish; the vast majority of students seem to be modern language, but there is a group of English students like myself too. The reason I did this programme was because I felt English was too insular and I wanted to get an idea about what Romanticism, for example, was like in other countries. Before this I had only read two French writers (Guy de Maupassant and Anais Nin [i.e. short stories and erotic short stories ]), and small bits of Rousseau but he does not count, really. Now I have read Stendhal, Hugo, Balzac, Flaubert, Zola (19th), Dujardian, Sartre, Duras (20th), Rabelais, Voltaire, Rousseau and Camus (European literature of ideas).

Likewise, while I 'specialised' (if you can do such a thing without knowing the language) on Russian literature, because I did my undergraduate extended essay on Fyodor Dostoevsky and took optional units on Dostoevsky and Russian history on my programme, I also got a chance to research German influences on Russian literature through independent study. In fact, I am working on what is really German philosophy of history (Herder, Kant, Schiller) at the moment so it just goes to show what a great programme it is.

My language skills leave a lot to be desired. While my specific area of research does not strictly need language skills, I am going to bite the bullet and try and learn either German or Russian (or both, ah, what optimism!) when I have handed my dissertation in in September. I was one of those idiots at school who dossed about in German thinking I would never use it (since I did a year of computing at degree level, before doing English) only to realise that I would now love to read a foreign language (not so concerned about speaking it to be honest) because some things have not been (and are not likely to be) translated. Plus it means I could go and do a PhD in another country too...

I'm sorry, but there are no pros to the Durham nightlife - unless you count the fact that you'll get loads of work done because you'll never want to go out.

Oh jeeees what do Durham students have to say about this?? because I've applied there and thought it had a pretty good social scene? Thanks
