I don't think it is that unusual to have to wait months for an appointment, not in my experience. Artists manage their waiting lists in different ways. It tests my patience to have to wait for artists whose work I admire, especially when they close their books for months at a time! :frown:

The idea of a tattoo designer is strange though, I agree. Personally I would research artists to find someone whose work I liked and whose style suited the piece. No good asking someone who specialises in Japanese work to do traditional, in a lot of cases.

There are amazing artists in London and no reason you shouldn't be about to find someone who'll do a great job.

I'm pretty confused by your post to be honest, but I'll try and help...

So I'm confused because I don't understand how you could be on a waiting list for 3-4 months (I would have thought only Frith Street maybe has a list that long) and then they would still draw it up on the day.

Where are you getting tattood? And is it the same place each time? It's pretty poor form of them to draw it up on the day, are you sure they haven't pre drawn it or are just adding some hand draw elements? Also, if you are just getting small tattoos or designs they do on a regular basis, swallows/anchors/stars/tribal/lettering/flowers/the list goes on, then there is no real need for them to custom draw something up.

Also, this idea of having a tattoo designer is weird, your artist should be desigining your tattoo (if they are half good) as they are the person with the experience of how ink will look on different parts of the body and they will have the experience of specific aesthetic.

What you need to do is look through the following sites, look at the artist profiles, and find an artist who tattoo's in a style you like. Then call the studio and ask when they have a free spot for you to come in and have a quick chat about what you want (make sure you take reference material), see if they feel it's something that would work and get their opinion on a design. A design should never come 100% from the person getting tatoo'd, that's where crappy tattoos come from. Your artist should be inputting into the design from start to finish, they do know better than you.

All the studios I've mentioned below are top notch (I've had about 15 hours of tattooing done at Skunx and since I moved to London it's the only place I go) and I'd be very surprised if they drew up a design on the day (unless as I've said it was something kinda standard ish)

I went for my first tattoo to the family business shop, and despite having a consultation (where I gave all the materials) before booking my tattoo appointment (3 months later), the artist didn't do any sketch. I had to wait 2 hours before seeing the lettering, but he said for the flower-ish design, he will do it during the inking session. Then he never did what we agree, he just did something basic whereas my design had much more depth and details.

That's why I'm avoiding this rip-off shop despite hearing so many good reviews.

My second tattoo, I had a great experience. But the artist went back to Australia.

So now I'm looking on doing some tribal/henna/pattern dots tattoo on my forearm covering the rubbish design of my first tattoo (not the lettering bit though).

I think it is quite normal for artists to show you their design on the day, unless you contact them in advance asking to see it. It may also depend on how you made the booking.

I have two custom pieces. My first was made by booking a consultation with the artist in advance were he sketched his ideas and we talked about the design. I paid the deposit and the first I saw of the final design was on the day of my first appointment.

My second appointment was made by email where I had no direct contact with the artist at all and I had to wait 9 months for said appointment. I heard nothing at all about the design until I turned up on the day. The artist had taken my email description and drawn up three designs.

I follow quite a few artists on Instagram and I get the impression from their sketches that most clients don't see them until the day of their appointments. I often wondered if this is so clients have to turn up to the appointment to see the design.

If you are in London and looking to book with London artists I would go into the shop and speak to the artist. If they can sketch some ideas whilst talking to you, I'm sure you will get a feeling of whether you are thinking along the same lines.

What sort of style are you looking at?

Thanks for your reply. I'm looking at doing some tribal/henna patterns on my forearm
Hmm that style isn't one where I am overly familiar with a selection of artists. Tamara Lee at Black Garden does dotwork designs, but I don't think it extends to tribal.

Check out Black Garden Tattoo on Facebook to see her gallery, though I'm not sure it is exactly what you are looking for. I can vouch for the shop; both myself, and my OH have had custom pieces from two different artists there.

So I don't have any newer photos, this was after the second sitting on my leg, i've had another 5 hours work done on it (about an hours more more colour on the front and about 4 hous or so work on the back of my calf) and there is about another 3 hours to go before the back is all finished

The back of the leg is a continuation of the storm, a compass and a swallow+anchor at the top of calf, and in the storm at the bottom there is a little rowing boat being towered over by a sea monster

Love the colours. Really nice tattoo
I really want to get a tattoo I wanted to get the infinity symbol on my wrist because then if I get a job that doesn't view them nicely I can cover it up well with a watch or bracelets. I'm not saying the pain will put me off as that's not a massive factor, but how much will if hurt on my wrist because the other place I was thinking was the base of my neck.

Thank you

Agree completely, a really nice piece!

Is that white ink? If so, can I ask how its healing up?

Hey guys, joined as I like tattoos and will have 1 or more someday. Love the ones on this thread.

I at some point want something celtic-ish (cornish heritage is quite important to me), something rat related (long story) and one of those at least to have red roses incorporated. Doubt I could get a design with all 3 elements I like. Bit worried about celtish + roses looking a bit cliche but both are important to me!

Anyone know any good artists in Cornwall or South Devon? Will probably be a long time for me (want to lose weight first!) but I love looking

Loving looking at all your tattoos, all are stunning
I don't know of any artists specifically in your area, part of me thinks I have heard of someone good, but I can't remember their name!

If I were you I would buy a couple of copies of Total Tattoo magazine to get an idea of the style you are looking for. If you see artist's work that you like, check to see if they have a facebook page and look at their work.

I don't see any reason why a decent artist wouldn't be able to do a celtic influenced rat (love rats!!) tattoo with roses

Yes

Not as bad as ribs, worse than calf/thigh/chest/stomach

Anywhere you're tattooing that is boney tends to be painful. Getting m kneecaps done soon, excited/terrified, supposed to be one of th mor painful spots

Mine touches my collarbone, hideous pain when he was tattooing over the bone. But it only took an hour, you did well to sit through it for so long.

How did the whole getting a tattoo without your parents seeing it go?

The UV tattoo post was interesting, I'm considering it myself.

As a guy I need something parents won't see, so chest/back is risky.
I'll be forever judged and shamed if they found out. =P

Haven't got one yet, just added more piercings to myself instead. I think until I've fully moved out and they're not helping support me through uni I really can't.

I got a tattoo without my dad knowing, but I was 24 at the time. I still wouldn't recommend it.

Nope, the studio I would want to go to doesn't do UV and tbh I've semi gone off the idea, just want a plain simple black cross instead.

No, I'm not Asian.

To be honest I probably won't get one unless I knew I could hide it and getting one on my knob area isn't really on the agenda. =P

I love tattoo's but I can live without it.
I like them more on girls anyway, something small/medium and subtle. Mmmm.
