HSBC Summer Work Experience Placement Events

Hi all,

Was wondering whether anyone has applied for the work experience event at HSBC Corporate Centre, London or the Branch Network event, at your local branch?

Anyone heard yet? Put my application in early, and job advertisement has disappeared from the HSBC Jobs Taleo website, but haven't heard a word yet.

Good luck to all applicants!

Anyone?

They've asked me to do an online assessment last week which I've done and now I'm still waiting for a reply if they'll offer me a telephone interview. I've applied for the Commercial Business Analytics Work Experience Placement btw.
I did my test 25 days ago but no reply as of yet.

That's great! How old are you/what year are you in school? I have just received a message that they want to take a telephonic interview, for the Branch Network Work Experience Placement.

No it's not. What kind of 'genre' of answers did you give? The 'I'll help everyone' kind or the self-centred type?

i would say a mixture

i would say a mixture

That should be fine then? A mixture of 'I want to help the society and the company' and 'I want to better myself'?

You'll be fine!

Hi, I have applied for 2 of the work experiences at HSBC for this summer as well! I just got an email saying that i need to book an appointment for a telephone based interview... arghh D:
Have any of you got this email as well? And if so how are you planning to prepare for it, since i heard they are very harsh while interviewing and get into all the details and ask you whole different types of questions :/
I even read in one place that someone got rejected while still being interviewed hence my anxiety towards this interview...

Really? That's not good! I will copy and paste all of the information that I found on the HSBC website about the Telephone Interview, it may help some people. Apparently they use a third party interviewer. That means that they will be serious about it. I have prepared some answers, but I will rejig them to match the format that HSBC wants.

HSBC Telephone Interview Information:

We often conduct a short interview by phone to assess candidates against some of the important criteria we are looking for.
If we invite you to have a telephone interview, remember that you'll need to put in just the same kind of preparation and involvement as if it were face-to-face.
The Values Based Telephone Interview is a relatively short interview conducted by phone. It should last between 45-60 minutes as a rough guide and includes time to receive the results and verbal feedback, if you wish to receive it.
The Values Based Telephone Interview will be conducted by a third party accredited specialist interviewer and will include open ended questions around the HSBC Values of dependable, open and connected. For example "Tell me about a time when ...".
In answering the questions, you have the opportunity to share examples of when you have demonstrated HSBC’s Values. We will ask you to tell us about specific occasions when you have demonstrated your openness, connection and dependability. Think of at least one strong example for each value. These don't have to be drawn from work.
In Open we expect you to be honest and straight talking. To treat others with respect and fairness. To listen to their ideas, show genuine appreciation of their needs and collaborate effectively for the benefit of the team.
In Connected we expect you to build relationships with customers, colleagues and the community in which you work. To empathise with others, take care to understand the impact you have on them, and act with their best interests at heart.
In Dependable we expect you to be committed to quality in everything you do. To take accountability for the results you deliver, and you can always be relied on to stand up for the right course of action, even in challenging circumstances.
Your invitation to attend the telephone interview will include instructions on how you can use the self service system to set up the interview at a time that suits you.
To help you prepare for the telephone interview, follow these top tips:
self-schedule the telephone interview at a time that suits you and make sure that you have a quiet area to make the call from with no distractions
if you are going to use your mobile phone to take the call, please ensure it has enough battery life
be available at the time agreed for the interview
prepare to provide at least one example of when you have demonstrated each value. These do not have to be drawn from work
try to use different examples for each value
use the STAR format to articulate your examples:
Situation what was the overall situation
Task what was the specific task required of you
Action what steps did you personally take (avoid "we" and reference what you did "I")
Result what happened / changed after your actions
bear in mind that you won't be able to make eye contact or use body language as you would in a face-to-face interview. So it's very important that you listen carefully and speak clearly, politely and confidently
provide direct and honest answers
naturally, we understand that you may need some time to think through your answers. So it is ok to pause for a moment.
At the end of the telephone interview you will be advised if you have met the required criteria and will be offered verbal feedback.
UK Work Experience Programme Telephone Interviews
This is a telephone interview, we will contact you on your preferred number as designated on your profile.
Please make sure your number is up to date as we will not be able to re-schedule telephone interviews that are missed.
The interview is expected to take 15-20 minutes and is only available during school hours. Because the work experience will be taking place during term time, it is expected that your school/college will have given you permission to participate in the programme and therefore should not have any issue with you having a telephone interview during this time.
Please make sure you can commit to the time you choose as we have a limited number of spaces and are unable to reschedule appointments.
The telephone interview will focus on topics that HSBC values.
HSBC prides itself on being dependable, open and connected.
HSBC's interviews are competency based, meaning we are looking for specific examples of a time you have done something or have reacted in a certain way. Please do not be vague or general, try to come up with specific examples of situations or events in which you have played an active role.
When preparing for your interview, please think about how you connect with other people, how you can display being dependable as well as doing the right thing and how you can show being open and honest with others.
Good luck!

Can someone help me out

You cannot be sure that you have been rejected until you get confirmation. Anyway, it's not the end of the world anyway. The best way to get yourself in is if you have contacts: relatives working or knowing anyone who works in the banking sector. By the way, how old are you / which school year are you in?

You have to be confident. Also, if your CV gets you to the interview, the interview will get you further, that's why you should prepare excellent answers for the interview.
