REDOX reactions

1.Could someone briefly explain what's happening to the elements when they're oxidised/reduced?
2. Reduction is the -'ing of oxidation numbers, whilst oxidation is the +'ing...have i got that right?

Thanks

Oxidation Is Loss of electrons, Reduction Is Gain of electrons (OILRIG)

Oxidation is loss of electrons and reduction is gain of electrons (OILRIG) so when an element is oxidised the oxidation number increases and when an element is reduced, the oxidation number decreases.
