Continuity Correction In Hypothesis Testing

Hi,

When using a normal approximation to a discrete distribution (Poisson say) my textbook tells me to use a CC so as to minimise the value of the z statistic.

Could someone please explain to me why we would want to minimise z? Is it to minimise Type 1 errors or something?

Thanks
