Can someone tell me if we have to arrive the Saturday 6th September or if it is convenientto arrive earlier?

You can't arrive earlier, halls will open at about 10am that day, I think, and it's not possible to get in earlier

You can't actually get into your hall until 10am on the 6th. But a lot of people arrive in St Andrews a day or two before and stay at a hotel in town. If you plan to do that, you should book your hotel as soon as you're sure you're going as the hotels become fully booked very quickly. I got there a day early last year and was able to take a look around my hall before anyone else arrived, so that's an option.
