OCR A2 Chemistry A Specification Query

For redox reactions, do we have to know when to add H+/H20 in acidic/basic conditions? I cannot seem to find any reference to this in the specification or text book, however my teacher says we need to learn it. Also, do we have to know the common oxidation states of formulae such as Fe/So3/SO4/MnO4- etc etc?

I teach that it'll be in acidic conditions unless stated. Where and when to add H+/H2O is a required skill for creating half equations and hence redox equations.

You don't have to memorise oxidation states, but you'll probably remember a few since you'll use some regularly.
