Thanks for the response. They emailed back to say they’ve had lots of submissions and I should hear soon. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
Hi guys,

I received an offer for MSc Computing at Imperial and I was wondering what your opinion is on switching to the specialist course, MSc Computing (AI), as I want to get into an AI programming job afterwards. I originally didn't apply for the specialist course since I thought you need a lot of computing experience, which I don't have but am learning via courses on Udemy and Coursera and do have a little coding experience.

How difficult is it to switch to the specialist course? Is it worth asking admissions if I can switch (have already accepted the general Computing offer and don't want this to revoked)? Thanks!

I asked them before regarding switching to MSc ML but they are very strict on switching courses. Also do you have a GRE score? Worth a try but they wouldnt take your offer away.

Hello!

I have been accepted to UCL for the MSc in Computer Science (2018/2019).

Is there a Facebook group for the people who have been accepted?
If not, do you think it is a good idea to create one?

Many thanks.

Thanks for replying! When you say strict, do you mean you need to meet certain conditions or is it generally not allowed? Seeing as I would ask prior to starting the course, I thought it might be easier than doing it once we started the course.

I don't have a GRE score but if a switch is possible with a GRE score, I would take the exam for it.

I was requesting to take on extra modules and even then, they wouldnt allow it. I then proceeded to ask if they can put me forward for the MSc ML and they say they couldnt either but didnt specify the reasons... It's worth a try although (depending on your background and undergraduate degree) specialist courses might be a stretch if you havent cover lots of low level stuff... Popular courses on Udemy and Coursera are usually high level data science materials with exceptions like cs50. Somewhat I am glad I didnt switch to MSc ML. You can always go above and beyond with your summer project  Let me know how it goes tho if you decided to contact them!

University of Bath - dont worry about rankings, get good grades and build up your portfolio.

Thanks for replying !, hope so !
Hey all! I've just accepted an offer for the MSc CS (Conversion) at Bristol University. I'm hearing varied responses in terms of how much math prep to do; I didn't take it past GCSE and haven't needed it much since bar basic equations at work. Does anyone have any pointers? Cheers!
I would brush up on your linear algebra and Pythagorean theory if you’re interested in computer graphics

Ah, thank you - that does sound familiar. I wish these courses provided official pre-course reading and prep, I feel like I'm prancing around in the dark a bit here :frown:
Is anyone still waiting to hear back, or has everyone had a decision by now? I am still waiting to hear back it's been 5 months, it's not looking too good haha, although I got an email from the admissions tutor about a month ago asking for my semester 1 module scores so not too sure what's going on.

Yeah sure, I study mechanical engineering, I'm waiting to hear back from Imperial College London for the MSc Computing course, what about you?
I applied to Imperial and Queen Mary around mid-March, still waiting for a decision from both of them.

Hello

I've applied to Manchester Met for the MSc Computing (conversion course), has anyone else by any chance? Its not been mentioned anywhere in this thread and I'm a little worried that its not a worthwhile course.

I'm also concerned that I'm not experienced enough; I have a Psychology degree (2:2) I struggled with illness / motivation in the final year - it was totally the wrong course for me. This past year I've been working on my maths ability, currently working on proofs, linear algebra, precalculus and working towards CS50. I work in a completely unrelated area (support work / care) and I'm really *trying* to correct some poor life choices so I haven't done anywhere near as much as I would have liked.
If I were you, I would look at the program for the course, if it is what you expect. You have other options that accept a 2:2, Birmingham for example. These are conversion courses, so they dont expect for you to know how to program, but if you can, it is an advantage.

Yes, it doesn't compare particularly favourably against other courses; I asked the tutor at the open evening about the absence of discrete maths and he said it was covered with the topics provided.

I'm concerned that with a mediocre Psychology degree I will still not be employable in the roles that I would be hoping for, compared to say others on this thread who have degrees in Economics / Math related degrees - I don't how to overcome that. I'm not fantastically bright, I feel- just kind of average, although very willing to work hard. I'm ultimately aiming for interaction technology / UX design with a view to designing technology or software for people with learning difficulties, or the general pop - creating tech that is easier to use.

Birmingham does look to be a far better course - the commuting for me would be around three hours from Lancashire - no part-time option available. On the other hand, Liverpool (which does offer part-time) seems to have a reasonable course so I have emailed the tutor asking if there is anything I can do to up my mediocre degree and gain acceptance on their course. I haven't received a response yet though, I guess part-time would give me options to work on getting up to speed with the concepts though.

Well, I have bachelor in mechanical engineering, I did a lot of maths(no discrete maths). But to be honest, for software development, you dont need it that much, there are far to many examples of people that learned programming through online resources. I mean it depends on what you work with, but for most cases you dont need it. Having a Psychology degree will make you a better choice for certain jobs and not so good for others, the most important is that you build your portfolio and people like it, after that you will get hired based on your work.
My top choices for universities were Glasgow(2:1), UC Dublin(2:2) and Birmingham, mainly do to their programs, if you are going to invest time and money, you might as well try to get in to the best option that you can find, and that means, for me, a university with a strong program, that will give me strong capabilities when I go to work.
I cant say much about commuting, since I am not from the UK, but commuting everyday 3 hours doesnt seem like a good option.

Thanks for your response.

I considered Birmingham, but only if they would allow me to do a part-time option, which according to their website they don't offer.

I would much prefer Liverpool who are asking for a 2:1 but they've declined my application. I asked the tutor if there was anything I could do to *up* my application so that I could be permitted to study, he replied saying they offer a pre-Masters course but it turns out that a) it's only for foreign students, and they won't allow me to just do some aspects of the programme and b) costs start at £16,000. I've responded saying it's simply not possible and he's effectively shrugged and said there is no other option.

I even bounced the idea of part-time study on the basis that they were worried that I might not keep up, then that would be more manageable.

I'm pretty gutted to be honest. I'm not sure whether I could add extra modules with the Manchester Metropolitan, I would still imagine I'd be stuck with a MSc Computing though or just not bother; its not meant to be.
