Current University: University of Surrey
Current course: MPhys Physics
Prospective Course: MASt Theoretical Physics
Prospective Colleges: Claire or Trinity
Current University Grades: 83%
Any research experience/valuable information:
- Experimental nuclear physics imaging research in imaging, involving algorithms, machine learning and AI
- Awarded prize for best overall performance in second year (83%)

Application timeline:
- 19/09/23: Application submitted
- 03/11/23: Last referee submitted
- 13/11/23: Under review by department
(edited 3 months ago)
Current University: Durham University
Current Course: Mathematics MMath (on 3rd year, will leave this year if I get an offer)
Prospective Course: MASt Mathematical Statistics
Prospective Colleges: Trinity/Churchill
Current Grades: 83% in year 1, 85% in year 2

Research Experience and Useful Info:

Bayesian Neural Networks with a neuroscience researcher, stochastic analysis project with a probability professor, both in summer 2023. Focused on probability, analysis and statistics as much as possible. I'm wondering if both a probabilist and a statistician will look at my application, since the pathway for people interested in either seems to be through Mathematical Statistics.

Application Timeline:

05/12/23: Application submitted with both referees

25/03/24: Application Unsuccessful

Unfortunately I didn't make it this year. Best of luck for future applicants!

I also asked this in the official postgrad applications thread but I imagine I may get a better answer here:
I'm currently doing B.Sc. maths at the University of Manchester and have applied for Part iii maths at Cambridge. In second year I averaged 92% but I'm worried about my chances of an offer due to doing quite badly in the first semester of year 1 (55%). However my average grade in semester 2 was 93% (so overall first year average of 74%). Do you think that my poor results in semester 1 might ruin my chances? Please be brutally honest..

I heard that they care more about the grades in the second and third years than the first, and that they like to see an improvement among subsequent years. Your current grade averages to 83%, and Manchester is a decent university. I think you should have a good of a shot as anyone else with similar scores and good reference letters depending on your module choices. Which pathway did you apply to? Did you do relevant advanced modules in your second and third years for what you are applying for?

From what I can see in threads like these in the past few years, MASt Mathematical Statistics tends to send updates much slower than pure or applied? I hope this is not the case, as I have to inform my current institute as early as possible that I intend to leave here without doing the 4th year of the MMath.

I think I saw somewhere that they actually go over the stats applications the latest. I think it's pure, then applied then stats. Saw somewhere that the only difference between the 3 streams is when you'll actually be considered for the place.

what date more specifically? any updates since then?
Got moved to PAO. This is basically 100% offer unless there is fraud in my application right?

From what it seems from past years, basically, yes, unless you’ve forged some of your documents. So, congratulations!
