I welcome this working paper and its findings of sorts. Simple fact is, NI needs to remain under EU Custom rules. Our trade links with southern Ireland are incredibly large, and the problems would be massive if we left. Agriculture springs to mind for this, with many farms in NI on the border and trading with our ROI Ulster counterparts.
I think this is a non-starter, quite apart from the DUP issue, I just don't see how this could work on a practical level. Here's a better idea: the UK joins EFTA, everyone's happy. Well, not Farage, but who cares about him?

So, Ireland, NI and the EU says there can be no hard border between Ireland and NI.
UK says there can be no hard border within the UK.
Therefore, there can be no hard border between the EU and the UK.
