Properties of alkyl groups

Hi all,

I'm currently having to write some notes on alkyl groups (specifically, alkanes without a hydrogen and not alkyl halides etc), and I was wondering where I could find some information on its properties.

Everything I've come across so far has conflicting information or they've not been specific about alkyl groups.

For example: Are they electron withdrawing or electron donating? Are they acids or bases or neutral? Do they act as electrophiles or neucleophiles? Do they increase steric hindrance? Why?
