Hi all! I'm hoping to connect with offer holders in the Department of Politics & IR (especially the European Politics & Society stream), or alternatively folks who have been offered college membership at St. Edmund Hall--I would love to know if you happen to have either of those academic/accom. features in common! Perhaps it is because I am international student, but I feel a bit apprehensive about meeting people at Oxford, and I am very eager to connect with people or seek out opportunities to do so.

Is anyone familiar with St. Edmund Hall's MCR (is it lively, does it run a lot of social activities, etc.)? Just trying to figure out what to expect. Any insights re: my program (in terms of opportunities to make friends) or my college would be very much appreciated!

I have also been offered a place at St Edmund Hall! I'm also an international student too but my course is MSc Education. I'm sort of getting cold feet about all of it though - the college is small and the staff aren't so helpful (when I emailed them last). Do you know where you're staying exactly? There are three main housing options if I remember correctly, and they will inform us in August about the lease contract etc.

Hi! I am glad to hear there is someone else on here accepted to Teddy Hall (I thought chances were pretty slim given that it is such a small college). Do you mind me asking where you're from? I'm from Canada, and my name is Julia.
I'm sorry to hear that your communication with the staff has not been great--my experience with them has actually been better than with my department so far. (I was in communication with Scarlett, if it helps, in relation to my Visa requirements.) I understand your feelings about cold feet, though! I would rather have met some of the incoming students or staff in person before I sign my life away financially.
I don't know where I'll be staying exactly--do you? Based on the Teddy Hall website, the bulk of Graduate Accomm is in Norham Gardens, so I expect it to be somewhere in that area, but that still feels very vague to me. To me, August feels very late to determine lease contracts without already discussing preferences about the housing options with the students--but then again, I'm used to the Canadian system, so maybe it's standard in the UK...?

Hi Julia! I hope our conversation doesn't appear spam-y to the rest of the people on this thread so I'll shoot you a DM. But in the meantime - long story short, I had some specific conditions about the room I'll be staying in so I contacted SEH way in advance (got my offer in December 2018 - I applied by the Nov. deadline) and they've sorted it all out. Scarlett is lovely!

And yes, my ultra-OCD tendencies and need for constant affirmation and updates aren't being met with open arms (lmao) from what I know, everything is super laid back and last minute in the UK. I was surprised that they didn't even ask me for a security deposit even after sorting out where I'll be accommodated.

Hello everyone,
I’d like to ask how long it takes to receive unconditional offer after fulfilling the conditions. My department is Pharmacology and the college is Lincoln.
Very much depends on how fast your department admin is. You should receive something called a “confirmation of conditions met” letter from them. I’m not from Pharmacology, but my department admin is quite slow and unresponsive (they say the person only works part time hence the delays in replying my emails). If you’ve waited far too long for a confirmation after you sent all your required documents in (mine was just the transcript), try to contact the director of your department (this should be the person who signed your conditional offer letter). Luckily my director of studies was super friendly and helped me out with my issues and he also sent a reminder to the admin, which turned out to be more effective than my multiple worried emails lol. I sent my transcript in around 20th June and got my unconditional probably a month later.
Your college should also send you a separate unconditional confirmation after you’ve met the financial condition, mine was given to me on the same day as the college admin was much more efficient.

August is late for most UK unis, but Oxford doesn't start term until mid-October, so everything is pushed back. I was at a different uni for undergrad, so I am finding the delays and vagueness quite irritating. I guess Oxford has its own system to which we must all acquiesce.

I am also at Lincoln but in a different department. I sent in the rest of my materials well over a week ago but have not received confirmation from the college.
I assume my conditions have been met for the department as they have already sent me my CAS for my visa application.

Oh, congrats. I’m still dealing with the IELTS. That’s why I asked.
Hey guys,
Do you know that there is an exception for the IELTS scores? I’d like to know in case I couldn’t get them.
Hi
I am just wondering if anyone knows if it's easy to get involved in the social life and make friends from your college if you are living out alone in private accommodation? Or would you be isolated as people make friends with who they are living with in college accommodation?
Thanks
There are a lot of qualifiers, but in general, I would recommend college accommodation if you are new to Oxford and have no friends already there. All is not lost if you live out, as in both cases, you'll be able to access your college's MCR (graduate common room) - which will organise social events - and Hall, where you will socialise over meals. And if you are on a taught course, you'll meet your colleagues at lectures. In addition, Oxford is very compact - a 15 minute bike ride will take you anywhere. The main difference will be that if you are living on-site, or in a college grad house, you'll be seeing and running into each other every day without having to make the effort to go into your college or department, so its easy to share a coffee, or organise something spontaneously.
hi everyone. so i've been off facebook for years now, and i would really hate to get back unless it's really necessary because it seems that college events and announcements/ department conferences and other functions/ other oxford uni events/ secondhand bikes etc are all advertised on facebook... is it worth starting all over and creating a new account?

Hi, Julia!
My name is Aleksei and I also have been offered a membership at St Edmund Hall, I will be doing DPhil in Atomic and Laser Physics there.
Just like you I am an international student (I am from Moscow) and I also don't know where will I live (but I believe this will be Norham Gardens). It is about month left and I am looking forward to visit UK since I've never been there (and I suspect life there to be drastically different from that of mine here).

As far as I have seen below, maquansha is also from Teddy Hall do you still communicate somewhere in a way not to spam in this thread?
Has anyone from the law dep. received their letter confirming that the conditions attached to the offer have been met? If so, how long did it take to receive this letter after sending the transcript? :-)

Hi Aleksei! I sent Julia a DM weeks ago and haven't heard back from her-- but on another note, I have been recently informed that it's easier to connect with people from your department/ college/ society etc. through Facebook, so I think that's our best bet!

You'll receive the confirmation once all conditions have been met, including those administered by your college (i.e. financial declaration and supporting documents).

In my case, I posted my transcript to the faculty in April, and then posted my financial documents to the college a couple of weeks after that. My college confirmed receipt of the financial documents, and the faculty sent me a confirmation letter four business days later.

Privet, Aleksei! I am from Moscow too! I will be a master student at St Antony's College. Sorry, I am out of the loop here. Just wanted to greet you:wink:
