If X has the distribution N(4, 16), find
(a) the number a such that P(|X 4| a) = 0.95
(c) the 90th percentile,
(d) the interquartile range
how would i do these questions without tables

Really? You won't get a very accurate answer as you'd effectively have to remember key values.

Ah but they've doubtless had it drummed into them that 95% of a normal distribution is within two standard deviations of the mean. Of course this information is not useful if you're unable to back out what range of values corresponds to this.

Agreed, or 1.96 std devs or whatever the significant figures are ...
