first person or third person writing?

If you want to write about an important issue focusing it around an individual’s story would it be more effective to write such a story in first person or third person? Rather than just being a story told it would also raise some important societal questions for the reader to think about etc for example it would be something similar to writing about a refugee but also raising some points about the sort of system / ideologies in place around that refugee in details. How would you get the point of view right to help highlight a couple of different perspectives on a problem?
I always think 3rd Person books are better. It makes the main character seem less like a douche at times, and allows you more freedom to emphasise with the other characters, as well as potentially making it easier to write in their shoes.
