What will happen if you add hydrochloric to each nitrate, separately?

silver nitrate- white precipitate forms

sodium nitrate-no reaction

So... it isn't so much that it is hydrochloric acid that is being used as the test, more a case of the Cl- ions in the HCl(aq) that can distinguish between the two nitrates.
