Youre subtracting
1 - 1/2 = 1/2

Youre subtracting
1 - 1/2 = 1/2

But then why are the rest of the terms not subtracted, because should the second term not be 5/4x then?

Its
1 + (-1)*(....)
so the sign of each term in (...) is flipped

But 1+(-1)*(-1/4x)= 5/4x not 1/4x which is the answer. Could you please explain? It seems as though they don't add the 1 onto the answer

Multiply each term in (...) by -1 (so flip the sign) then add 1.
1 - 1/2 + x/4 ....
is
1/2 + x/4 ....
you should know this.
