A closer look at Clayhill halls of residence!

Here are a few things to note if you are interested in living in student accommodation, in particular Clayhill halls of residence!

One of the main reasons why I chose Clayhill was because of the ensuite toilets and great location! Although slightly further away from the Kingston town centre, Clayhill is just a short 15 mins walk away from Surbiton station and Penrhyn Road campus! Taking a direct train from Surbiton can easily get you into central London, Waterloo Station in 20 mins! :colondollar:

Clayhill also has a common room with a foosball table, table-tennis table and vending machines. The perfect place to chill and hangout with friends over a game of foosball or ping pong after class!

However, do note that the floors of the apartments at Clayhill are carpet (less the toilet and kitchen) so I recommend packing a pair of bedroom slippers when you move in! Also, the room doors at Clayhill are fire doors and auto-lock whenever they close! So always remember to leave your room with your keys whenever you step out! Depending on the configuration of the building, each room may vary slightly in size but Room 1 tends to always be the largest! The kitchen comes with a microwave, toaster and kettle and should also include two storage cupboards for you to store your cooking utensils and appliances!

Regardless of which student accommodation you choose, please remember to check the floor plans before deciding on which room, as different buildings have slightly different configurations so rooms may vary in size!

Are you considering staying at Clayhill halls of residence? Have any doubts? Feel free to drop down any questions below and I’ll try my best to answer them! :u:

Will I get informed when I'm charged for cleaning. And how much is it per person?

Thanks - how noisy are the halls of residence - and how many in each flat? Did you live in them? and do they normally allow foundation course students? Thanks in advance.

Hi there @Glorybe, yes foundation students are allowed to live in Halls of Residence. For Clayhill, it is usually 4 people to a flat with an ensuite bathroom and shared kitchen 🙂
Clayhill is situated within a residential area so it is usually pretty quiet. That said I would say that noise level in halls itself is entirely dependent on your housemates!
I lived in both Clayhill and Seethingwells during my first year at Kingston, I hope this helps and do let me know if you have anymore questions about life in Kingston! 🙂

Hiii @anonymous #1, I believe Halls Management will send you a letter or email regarding this. However they will not charge you unnecessarily and will give you ample time to clean the communal areas. I have yet to be charged before and the cleaner who checks each week will leave a note behind so you know what to tidy up 🙂

Hi there @i_amsj , from my understanding the floor plan should be available when booking your rooms through the Uni's accommodation portal. It should display the layout of your flat for you to pick the room of your choice! 🙂 Hope this helps and do let me know if you have any more questions about life in Kingston!

Hi!
I was curious about the condition of the rooms as it is an older Accommodation. Are the toilets and mattresses somewhat decent ?and are the cleaning supplies such as vacuum cleaners good or are they old as well?also naturally in uk houses tend to get a little moldy and humid are these a problem for rooms from anyone?does the staff help out with any technical maintenance problems like water leakage of some sorts or heating problems ?as I’ve seen some negative reviews online about this particular aspect of the accommodation but they were a year ago so I would hope it had improved. Sorry for too many questions. I am just trying to get a clear picture in my head :’))

Hi there @Anonymous #2, from my personal experience I did not have an issue with the cleanliness of the mattress and toilets aside from the fact that the showers are of an older style (eg. raised shower platform with curtain). Fortunately, I also did not have any encounter with mould or humidity as regular cleaning, good ventilation and turning on the heater helps in preventing those issues 🙂 this is usually an issue if the flat is too cold and the warm air condenses! As for the staff, you can go to reception to submit a report if there are any technical issues with your flat (eg. slamming door, clogged shower) and they should come and check in with you within a couple of days! Some of the appliances are a little old but the cleaning supplies were sufficient and pretty basic like a hoover, mop and broom! I hope this answers your questions! 🙂

Hi there @liyajacob20 , the difference between the block numbers would simply mean that your Block 02 is probably located more inwards compared to block 33-36(which is closer towards the carpark). I personally have no viewed any rooms within that block but the configuration of your flat should be similar to that of other blocks. From what i've heard, Block 02 tends to be reserved for female Postgraduates students. Hope this helps!

Hi, i wanted to know more on your experience of transferring from halls. What was the process like and how does it work, ie. things like rent/contract, room availabilities, etc.

Hi there @Anonymous #3, I stayed in Clayhill halls of residence during my first year at Kingston and moved to Seething Wells during the summer once my Clayhill lease was up. The process of moving was pretty simple, I initiated a request via email to the accommodations team and was given a link and price list of available rooms (eg. micro-ensuite, budget, standard) to book for the summer. This changes from year to year so I suggest emailing early sometime in April if you are intending to stay in the summer 🙂 I hope this helps!
