Accommodation at Kingston - Finding The Right Fit

Accommodation is undoubtedly “top-of-the-list” when it comes to what requires your attention as soon as you confirm your university.

Kingston has a whole plethora of options to choose from, but the very first question you need to ask yourself is private or university. Both have their own pros and cons. Coming to the former, private refers to off-site accommodations, and Kingston has loads to choose from. One that I personally considered was Arbury Court, due to its free shuttle service to Kingston university, and the on-site fitness center. The biggest con of choosing private, especially during your first year, is that there is a high possibility of having flat mates that are from different universities, which might make it harder to fit in and make friends. Also, dealing with a landlord if you choose to rent from an individual can bring a whole new set of challenges.Coming to the latter, Kingston University has a lot to pick from. The biggest benefit of going with university accommodations is that you are guaranteed to be surrounded by people dealing with very similar problems, which helps fight feelings of isolation and also helps solve some of those problems. Another pro is that university accommodations usually have unparalleled connectivity to the campus(es), for example, Kingston university has free buses that run on three different routes throughout the day and take you to all the campuses and the other key locations in town. On the flip side, there are a few cons as well. On-site accommodations are usually more expensive as compared to their private counterparts. Further, some of Kingston university’s accommodations are quite far from some of the campuses in terms of walking distance, and while this is not a problem for most people, provided you book early and get an accommodation that is closer to your main campus. For someone like me, with a course that is spread out over three campuses, with the farthest one being about 2 bus rides on the university shuttle or a 45-minute walk, it can be a bit frustrating at times.

The accommodations that Kingston university offers are:

1.-Chancellor’s Hall: With en-suites ranging from 177 p/w to 213 p/w, spacious kitchens and communal spaces, it’s perfect if you’re studying at Kingston Hill or Roehampton Vale.

2.-Clayhill: Situated near Surbiton, Clayhill is about a 20-minute walk from the Penrhyn and Knights Park Campus. The standard en-suite here is priced at 171 p/w. This is the accommodation that I went with, as I really enjoy having a green space to relax in, which it offers in the form of the field and accompanying cherry blossoms 😊.

3.-Middle Mill: About a 2-minute walk from the Knights Park campus, middle mill has rooms with shared bathrooms priced at 177 p/w.

4.-Seething Wells: This is the largest accommodation with over 800 rooms and thus is a hot spot for loads of social activities. With rooms starting at 126 p/w, which is the cheapest available, all the way to 242 p/w, there’s loads to pick from.

5.-Walkden Hall: About a 2-minute walk from the Kingston Hill Campus, Walkden Hall features 160 recently refurbished rooms priced at 201 p/w.

6.-71-75 Penrhyn Road: While 71 and 73 are individual flats, 75 is a larger block with 4 floors and houses some communal spaces as well. This accommodation features en-suites ranging from 236 p/w to 320 p/w, and studio apartments from 368 p/w to 408 p/w. The rooms here are exclusive to Postgraduate students. All university accommodations have access to university shuttle buses, 24-hour security, high speed Wi-Fi, Laundrettes, bike storages and many more essentials.
